The Motor City celebrates the start of Hanukkah with online activities, kosher food, a fire show, and much more at the Menorah in the D event at Campus Martius in Detroit on Dec. 18, 2022.

This annual event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with a ceremony that features greetings from local community leaders and dignitaries, along with the lighting of a 26-foot-tall Menorah, which joins a giant Kinara and the city’s Christmas tree on display at Cadillac Square.

After the lighting, the celebration continues throughout the evening with strolling entertainment, including photo opportunities with Dreidel Man and Smile Man, a fire show, games and crafts for kids, and much more.

There will even be complimentary hot soup, snacks, and cider as well as Kosher food trucks to keep your tummy full throughout the event.

The 2022 Menorah in the D event will also include an online component for those who can’t make it to the in-person event. Sign up on the event’s website to receive a Lamplighter Kit, and then tune into the Zoom party the day of the event to watch the live happenings and participate in some virtual activities.

The doors of Menorah in the D open at 5 p.m. on Dec. 18, 2022, at Campus Martius in Downtown Detroit. The event officially starts at 5:30 p.m. and is free and open to all, regardless of their religious beliefs. Advance registration is required.
