The Michigan Science Center in Detroit is hosting a Discover Magic Community Free Day on March 20. The event, presented in partnership with sponsor Axalta Coating Systems, will include access to MiSci’s permanent hands-on exhibits as well as engaging activities that show the science behind magic.

Guests can enjoy Kaboomistry!, a live presentation about explosions that explores the connection between pressure, temperature, and fuel. Meanwhile, the Disappearing Water demonstration will show how the properties of sodium polyacrylate can make water vanish. And The Tablecloth Trick lesson will explain how magicians are able to successfully pull a tablecloth out from under dishes (hint: it’s inertia).

Additionally, Axalta, which produces and distributes paint for commercial vehicles, will present its “majestic” 2022 Global Automotive Color of the Year — Royal Magenta — during the event.

“…While people may not always connect the two, magic is impossible without science,” says Dr. Christian Greer, president and CEO of MiSci, in a press release. “With ‘Discover Magic,’ we are looking forward to an exciting day of sharing some of the secrets of color and magic.”

There is no cost to attend the event, but those interested in visiting the Discover Magic day must make reservations in advance. Tickets are available on MiSci’s website starting March 14. Those who wish to make a donation to the center can also do so online.
