CORRECTION: In our December 2016 issue, the photograph in the “River Retreat” story was misidentified. The picture of the Cottages at Water’s Edge was taken at Crystal Mountain resort near Thompsonville, and is not the Crystal Ponds Lodge in Manistee. Hour Detroit regrets the error. Crystal Mountain has year-round fun, but it’s exceptionally pretty in winter — especially the Cottages at Water’s Edge. The two- and three-bedroom cottages are among the resort’s more than 250 lodging options.
The cottages accommodate from six to nine guests, and are close to snowy activities that include nearly 60 downhill slopes and nearly 20 miles of cross-country trails. Explore the winter wonderland on a horse-drawn surrey ride or for more indoor relaxation options, pamper yourself at the spa.
Summer activities feature 36 holes of golf, plus excursions to nearby kayaking, canoeing, and tubing trips, fishing charters, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
The resort also has a Michigan Legacy Art Park, with more than 40 sculptures, poetry stones, and an outdoor amphitheater that hosts summer concerts.
