When it comes to hamburgers, metro Detroit locals have plenty of options. The area has become a hub for a number of trendsetting, award-winning, and underrated hamburger restaurants. Royale With Cheese: Inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s classic 1994 film Pulp Fiction, Royale With Cheese’s rustic theme and creative menu have made the location a new favorite in Midtown in only a year of opening. The halal restaurant’s most popular burger, the Royale features smoked brisket with southwest corn relish, caramelized onions, avocado, smoked gouda with cheese fondue, creamy coleslaw, and royale sauce.

Taystee’s Burgers: Located in a BP gas station in Dearborn, from the outside, this halal family-owned burger joint may not seem like much. But, this award-winning restaurant is home to some of the tastiest, hand-crafted burgers in metro Detroit. Over-the-top favorites include selections like the Ali’s Notch-Yo-Burger, garnished with nacho cheese and Doritos, and other burgers complete with unexpected toppings like mozzarella sticks, jalapeño poppers, mac and cheese bites, and more.

Townhouse: In the heart of downtown Detroit and Birmingham, this fine-casual American bistro offers gourmet comfort food, burgers, and craft cocktails, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. One of their most popular menu items is the award-winning Townhouse Burger, a blend of 28-day dry-aged steak cuts on a Plugrá butter brioche bun, topped with bourbon-glazed onions and aged white cheddar, and served with Townhouse fries.

Brome Modern Eatery: Originally Located in Dearborn, Brome recently debuted their downtown Detroit location in mid-May. The restaurant serves organic, grass-fed beef and non-GMO ingredients, offering a healthier option to burger enthusiasts. Gluten-free options, like the Mex burger (pictured above) are still full of flavor, topped with cheddar jack cheese sauce, corn salsa, pickled jalapeños, avocado, and chipotle mayo. One of the restaurant’s limited-time, popular choices is the Organic Joe, offered now through June 31. A play on the classic sloppy joe, the burger is an organic beef blend mixed with onions, peppers, garlic, tomato sauce, and brown sugar, topped with fried Copenhagen onions.

Lovers Only: The newest addition to Detroit’s historic Capitol Park, Lover’s Only is a trendy, fast, casual-dining restaurant offering diner-style hamburgers for a bargain. The eatery prides itself in burgers from 100% pasture-raised Michigan beef and sandwiches made with quality goods by local producers. The restaurant’s short, but diverse menu, include standard choices like the Classic Smash, topped with American cheese and the usual condiments, and deluxe options like the Green Street burger, a vegetarian Impossible Burger topped with white cheddar, parsley, shallot yogurt, and lettuce on an English muffin.

Redcoat Tavern: Based in Royal Oak with a second location in West Bloomfield, Redcoat Tavern is a British-American pub and hamburger restaurant with a retro theme. Known for its Original Redcoat Special Hamburger, customers can choose from a list of over 30 menu items, including cheeses, guacamole, truffle aioli, and banana peppers, to garnish their own custom burger creation.

Telway: Open since 1944, this small, counter-seating hamburger joint is one of the few burger destinations in metro Detroit that is open 24/7. Telway has been known for decades for its delicious burgers and late-night eats sold at a bargain – four sliders for $3.89, to be exact.

Hunter House Hamburgers: Named the #1 Burger in Michigan by Food Network Magazine in 2009, Hunter House certainly has a high reputation to uphold. Established in 1952, the location is the oldest restaurant in Birmingham, and offers simple, no-nonsense sliders with the option of double or triple patties, on a perfectly steamed bun. Mercury Burger & Bar: Located in Detroit’s historic Corktown neighborhood, this retro-inspired diner serves far more than burgers, including hot dogs, poutine tots, and boozy milkshakes.
