4 Mixology Courses to Celebrate National Cocktail Day

National Cocktail Day is nearly here! On March 24, the unofficial holiday asks its celebrators to not only imbibe libations, but also indulge in making their own. And while you can search the internet for a number of recipes, right here in metro Detroit, there are a number of mixology classes taking place at some of the buzziest bars. We’ve rounded up the best metro Detroit craft cocktail courses to take in anticipation of National Cocktail Day.


Detroit Mixology Bartending School

The school is hosting its Mixology 101 class on the day before National Cocktail Day — just enough time to reveal your inner mixologist and impress friends and family with original craft cocktails. The focus will be vodka and exploring “the most popular drinks made with Titos.” Each ticket will allow for three drinks per guest, a mixology course certificate of completion, and refreshments. The Detroit Mixology School is a state-licensed bartending institute that offers short Mixology 101 classes along with more extensive, 2-3 week, certification courses that will help you launch to bartending success. Detroit Cocktail Camp

The wildly popular “camp” series takes a group of “cocktail campers” to popular watering holes in metro Detroit to learn the tips and tricks behind making some of the most ordered cocktails in the Motor City. Session seven of Detroit Cocktail Camp is heading over to Ferndale’s Valentine’s Distilling Co. for its Spring Modern Drinks course.  Valentine’s, having won the award for “World’s Best Varietal Vodka” in 2017 from the World Drink Awards, and its bartenders will be teaching a course on clear liquor-based drinks, while also talking about the development of “base spirits,” and the progression of their flavored vodka and gin. Camp-goers will also have to opportunity to try and recreate some of the Ferndale distillery’s most popular drinks. Mar. 23. $48. Tammy’s Tastings

Are you craving warmer weathers drinks from the likes of Jamaica, Brazil, and Cuba? Food and drink experience group Tammy’s Tastings is hosting its Spring Break cocktail course at Ann Arbor’s swanky drinking spot, The Last Word. The 90-minute course includes a presentation on the history of mixology, as well as technique instructions, and a hands-on cocktail making session. The Sugar House

Calling itself Detroit’s original craft cocktail bar, owner Dave Kwiatkowski’s joint offers Fundamentals of Mixology, a course offered to cocktail lovers that serves as a condensed version of the class all of the bar’s mixologists must take before working. Upon arrival, participants will enjoy Sugar House’s signature punch along with a discussion on liquors, liqueurs and a variety of drink ingredients needed to make outstanding mixed drinks. After learning how to properly use cocktails tools, like a muddler, bar spoon, and jigger, the drink making will commence.
