For those with a sweet tooth, metro Detroit has never been an area that disappoints. From the soft and spongy tres leches cakes at Mexicantown Bakery in Detroit to the made-from-scratch seasonal treats at Love & Buttercream, which has locations in Royal Oak and Birmingham, local confectionaries keep on giving and growing. This means there are always new places to try. Below, we’ve rounded up five of the best new bakeries that are worth a visit.

Cannelle by Matt Knio

While this bakery isn’t technically new — The original location, Cannelle Patisserie, has been operating in Birmingham for several years now — the sweet spot’s second location opened this February in Detroit’s Capitol Park. Canelle by Matt Knio is a true French patisserie in every sense of the word, with rows of croissants, baguettes, and glistening patisseries. 45 W. Grand River Avenue, Detroit; 313-694-9767; open Tues.-Sun.

Lucki’s Cheesecakes

These colorful, kaleidoscopic cheesecakes have made their way to Detroit’s rapidly growing Woodbridge neighborhood. The newest location of Lucki’s Cheesecakes — which, in addition to its Superman cheesecake, has a popular peach cobbler cheesecake, banana pudding, and more — sits in close proximity to Bikes & Coffee, and the new izakaya, Katsu. 5065 Trumbull Ave., Detroit; 313-285-9529; open daily.

Moose Pastry & Tea

After years of training in French pastry-making and cooking, Taiwanese-born chef Douglas Chou opened Moose Pastry & Tea in Novi this January. The new bakery replaced the well-loved Japanese bakery Pastry House Hippo. But Moose Pastry & Tea has already breathed a tasty new life into the space with its Asian-French fusion desserts like green tea tiramisu and strawberry shortcake. 42130 Grand River Ave., Novi; 248-964-4954; open Wed.-Sun.

Ochre Bakery

Situated in Core City, this bright little bakery opened in early April. The focus here is bread: the sweet and the savory kind. Try Ochre Bakery’s colorful, vegetable-studded flatbread or a braised lamb shoulder sandwich. Finish off the meal with a cappuccino and slice of olive oil cake. 4884 Grand River Ave., Detroit; open Tues.- Sat.

Treat Dreams Dessert Emporium

Ferndale favorite Treat Dreams, which closed in January for renovations, reopened earlier this month as an emporium. Alongside Treat Dream’s lineup of original ice creams, this dessert hall extravaganza, which is part of a partnership with Rebecca Abel of D’Vine Cookies, now sells Dave’s Sweet Tooth Toffee and Sander’s fudge. Stop in for a 5-pound ice cream sandwich, thick and creamy hot chocolate, or a 14-layer custom cake. 22965 Woodward Ave., Ferndale; 248-544-3440; open daily.
