Over the past few weeks, we’ve shared the devastating toll the coronavirus pandemic has taken on metro Detroit’s restaurant industry. We’ve outlined the ways in which local companies are pivoting their business models to stay afloat despite social distancing mandates, and have even called for your support to help relieve those eateries that have closed indefinitely. And despite the devastation the restaurant industry continues to face, one local restaurant group has made it their mission to help another tribe of workers in dire need of support — healthcare workers.
On behalf of Andiamo Catering & Event Management, Executive Chef Jim Oppat and Andiamo staffers are hand-delivering 450 meals to healthcare workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis at hospitals across the Detroit area. Oppat began the rounds on April 1, delivering 150 individually packaged meals to workers at Beaumont Hospital in Troy. Meals include housemade pasta dishes such as the Pasta Andiamo — linguine tossed in a Bolognese sauce — and fresh kale salads. The next stop on the tour will be Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township on April 8, and later, Beaumont Hospital in Grosse Pointe.
“The essential staff in healthcare are placing themselves between the community and COVID-19 every day,” says Samantha Visconti, director of catering for Andiamo Catering and Event Management. “With these meal deliveries, we’re able to provide work for our employees and meals for these amazing healthcare workers, whom we are so grateful for.”
Andiamo has pivoted to offer curbside and delivery services, as well as holiday specials like its upcoming Easter To-Go program, brunch and dinner meals made to serve a party of four. And thanks to its generous sponsors, Roncelli Inc., Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace, and Blake’s Orchard and Cider Mill, the company has been able to provide all meals to healthcare workers free of charge.
