More than 1,000 book lovers will gather to dine, swap book recommendations, and celebrate literary excellence at the Metro Detroit Book & Author Society’s biannual luncheon on May 20. Held at Burton Manor in Livonia, the event will showcase four authors: women’s rights activist Cecile Richards, journalist Elaine Weiss, mystery novelist Elizabeth George, and Detroit journalist Joe Grimm.

“We work hard to present a mix of fiction and nonfiction writers at the luncheons,” says Alan Fisk, consultant to the Metro Detroit Book & Author Society for author selection. “All are nationally known authors published by major houses or university presses.”

Richards, author of Make Trouble: Stand Up, Speak Out and Find the Courage to Lead, previously served as president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Weiss is the author of The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote, a detailed history of suffrage and the female leaders who led the cause. Steven Speilberg’s Amblin Television plans to adapt her book for television with Hillary Clinton as executive producer. George published the 20th installment of her popular Lynley Novel series, The Punishment She Deserves, last March. Several of her books have already been adapted for television. And Grimm was previously a Detroit Free Press editor. He is the author of The Faygo Book, which tells the story of the local soda pop company.

According to the society’s website, the luncheons are meant to offer a “comfortable and casual setting” for prominent authors to speak about their latest work and creative processes.

The authors will be available to sign purchased books after the luncheon. All book sales will be donated towards future grant awards.  The society will also honor two metro Detroit organizations that have contributed to the advancement of the arts and the promotion of literacy. Tickets are available for purchase at bookandauthor.org.
