etro Detroiters love our legends. Evident by the street names and monuments commemorating notable natives, the affinity for our hometown heroes is all around us. Just late last month, the City of Detroit named Willie Horton Drive after former Tigers star, Willie Horton, and in September, Chene Park was renamed Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre. Today, another music icon gets his recognition.
Entertainment company 313 Presents and Independence Township are honoring metro Detroit native Bob Seger and commemorating his last performances in his home state by changing the official address of DTE Energy Music Theatre to 33 Bob Seger Dr. The “33” was chosen to represent the number of times Seger will have performed at the venue by the end of his six-show run on June 21.
The address change comes just in time. Tonight marks the first of Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band’s six sold-out shows at the Clarkston-based venue — part of the legendary rock group’s final tour, Roll Me Away Tour.
“Bob Seger is a Michigan icon and one of the greatest rock-and-roll artists of all time,” says Tom Gores, owner of DTE Energy Music Theatre. “A Detroit legend and hero to his hometown, he’s always stayed true to his roots.”
Seger was born in the city of Detroit in 1945. He started playing music at only 16 years old with a band called The Decibels. Seger then formed the Silver Bullet Band in 1973 and recorded their first album at Cobo Center. The Grammy-award winning artist has been playing music for nearly 60 years. He has sold more than 75 million records worldwide, had 20 platinum and multi-platinum albums, and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
But Michiganians aren’t the only ones who love the “Old Time Rock & Roll” artist. (In fact, the band’s final tour has been so successful, they’ve recently added nine national tour dates since our coverage of Seger’s farewell shows in Hour Detroit’s June issue.) Tickets for these concerts, which will take place in San Francisco, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City, and more, go on sale June 7. Unfortunately, no new dates were added for the mitten state. However, it might be worth taking that long and lonesome highway straight to Indiana.
