Fans of Marcus Samuelsson will get a chance to sample the celebrity chef’s food when he takes over Central Kitchen and Bar from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2.

“I’m very excited for this next visit to Detroit,” says the James Beard-award winning chef, who is coming to town to promote The Red Rooster Cookbook: The Story of Food and Hustle in Harlem. “I have a lot of friends in the area and over the years have gotten to know [Central co-owner] Dennis [Archer] and his family, they always take great care of me.”

When he’s in town, he’s “a fan of visiting places like Eastern Market, Katoi, and Selden Standard.”

Samuelsson is the owner of Red Rooster in Harlem, which he envisioned more than a restaurant — it would be the heart of his neighborhood and a gathering place that dished up Southern black and cross-cultural food. His new cookbook pays homage to the neighborhood’s influences and flavors, and Friday’s menu will feature dishes from The Red Rooster Cookbook such as beluga lentil soup, deviled eggs, and cornmeal-encrusted catfish. Two cocktails will complement the special menu: Savoy (vodka, grapes, agave, and fresh lemon juice) and a Bourbon Negroni (fig and pear-infused bourbon, Campari, sweet vermouth, and orange wedge).

When he’s not cooking, he’ll also be mingling with diners and signing books.

Tables are booking up quickly and reservations can be made by calling 313-963-9000. Central Kitchen and Bar is located at 660 Woodward Ave. in downtown Detroit.
