Metro Detroit’s only truly independent theater, Cinema Detroit, will be celebrating Latin American culture with Cine Mexico from Sept. 17 – Oct. 25.
Throughout the weekly series, Cine Mexico Now will screen seven Spanish-language films. Additionally, some nights will offer authentic additions to supplement the experience including music from El Autentico Mariachi Juvenil Detroit and refreshments from Axle Brewing Co., La Gloria Bakery, and Hacienda Mexican Foods.
The retired furniture factory-turned film house has been standing since 1895, according to co-founder Paula Guthat who opened the independent theatre with her husband Tim in 2013.
“We had been bringing in world cinema at different times but never in an assembled series like this,” says Paula. “This is the first time we’ve ever did anything this ambitious. I think it’s important that we stay open to other cultures and countries and I think now there’s a lot of negative things being said about Mexico.”
The selected films feature something for everyone, from the family-friendly installment, Tesoros (Treasures) to the erotic sci-fi drama The Untamed. All seven titles being shown will be making their Detroit debut premieres.
For this series, Cinema Detroit has partnered with Cinema Lamont, a nonprofit that focuses on film as a cross-cultural learning tool. The organization was founded this year by former American Film Institute programmer Josh Gardner.
