MadewellMadewell’s first Detroit storefront opens today, and to celebrate, the womenswear retailer is hosting a launch party from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at its new Woodward Avenue location. Ten percent of all sales from the opening event will benefit Living Arts, a Detroit-based charity that provides high-quality arts education to youth.

One of several retail tenants for the Shinola Hotel, Madewell’s 2,601-square-foot space features a Denim Bar, which offers jeans from the brand’s Eco Edition line in addition to classic styles. The store is also fully stocked with knits, jackets, accessories, and more from Madewell’s new, fall collection, and is expected to receive more warm weather wear, like boots and coats, in the following weeks.

Shoppers attending the opening event can enjoy food from Detroit-based eateries Gather and Sister Pie, and sip on Sfumato cocktails featuring local liquor from Norden Aquavit and Detroit City Distillery. Ellen Rutt, a Detroit multi-disciplinary artist who created window graphics for the store, will also sell her work at the event.

The new location is participating in Madewell’s Hometown Heroes, a program launched in 2010 to spotlight local artists across the country by publishing interviews with creatives and designers on the brand’s blog as well as selling their work in stores.

“We’re very excited to open Madewell’s first location in Detroit on Woodward Avenue,” says Joyce Lee, Madewell’s head designer. “For the first time, our customers can shop with us in-person in the heart of the city, and discover art and specialty pieces from some of our favorite Detroit creatives.”

While select pieces from Detroit-based makers Jeff Tried, Nina Cho, and Little House Studio Co. Goods will only be available for purchase at the opening event, products from Ypsilanti’s Worthwhile Paper, and Detroit’s Tait Design Co. and Salt Textile Studio will be a part of the store’s permanent offerings.

Owned by J.Crew, Madewell opened its first Michigan location at Troy’s Somerset Collection in 2011. It also has a store in nearby Ann Arbor.
