A delicious new addition to Birmingham’s growing culinary scene — Adachi, a Japanese-inspired restaurant, opened on Wednesday in the restored Ford-Peabody mansion. Owner and chef Michael Schlow, of Schlow Restaurant Group, partnered with real estate developers Kenny Koza and Clint Mansour to rehabilitate the historic building into a vibrant new space while maintaining the integrity of the original. “The Ford-Peabody mansion is such a beautiful building filled with so much charm and character,” says Koza, who is a seasoned developer of award-winning hospitality projects throughout Michigan and lover of Japanese culture. “Clint and I really wanted to re-invigorate the space and excite people with a unique experience that will keep them coming back, time and time again.
Executive Chef Lloyd Roberts will be heading the kitchen alongside Schlow to maintain a seasonally rotating, locally sourced, menu of dishes traditional to Japanese cuisine and dishes inspired by it. Though young, Roberts is already highly decorated, training everywhere from The Art Institute of New York City to the kitchens of Jean-Georges Vongerichten at the former Manhattan restaurant, Vong and Nobu Matsuhisa’s famed Nobu locations in Moscow and Budapest.
The daily selection of sushi and sashimi will be accompanied by a variety of rice and noodle dishes, small plates, and numerous vegetarian selections. Diners will also be able to choose from a lengthy list of sake, Japanese whisky, craft cocktails, and more. The vibrant, 65-person dining room, is the work of D.C.-based designer, Molly Allen. During the warmer months guests will also have the option of dining al fresco. Try to make a visit before the month’s end!
