Experience the ambiance of Michigan state parks no matter where you are with Pure Sounds of Michigan, the first album to be released by a U.S. travel brand. The album, curated by the Pure Michigan tourism organization, debuts on May 22. Detroit-based recording studio Assemble Sound produced the album, which includes tracks by 12 Michigan artists.
Featured musicians include hip-hop producer Wajeed, who recorded the song “The Rock (Bridge to a New Day)” for the album, and electronic producer John Beltran, with “Childhood Memories.” Dave Lorenz, vice president of Travel Michigan, says the artists mixed their unique styles with sound recordings collected from 10 different state parks. “The artists who composed each track drew influence from R&B, classical, and new-age styles,” he says.
Although Pure Michigan organized the album, Lorenz says, to inspire travel to the state, the organization looks forward to it resonating with the people who are already here. “We hope to export nature, evoke memories, and give people the opportunity to experience Michigan in a whole new way,” he says.
Windy & Carl, an ambient group from Dearborn, had a similar goal when they recorded the track “Forest Trails,” for the album. Windy Weber — the Windy in Windy & Carl — says she wants the track to makes people feel relaxed and satisfied, yet curious. “I hope when people hear this song, it takes them to a place where they can see themselves listening to the birds, somewhere beautiful and quiet and full of possibility,” she says. The song is inspired by the group’s many experiences in Michigan’s forests. “It is an aural representation of being in the forest and taking a much-needed deep breath.”
All tracks from the album will be available at no cost on all major streaming services. Throughout the month of June, Shinola will also be offering a limited-edition vinyl with each turntable sold at its stores nationwide.
