More than 25,000 breast cancer survivors, caregivers, friends, family, and supporters are set to walk across Detroit on Oct. 13 during the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) event. Convening at Hart Plaza, the 3.1-mile walk collects donations for life-saving research as well as educates participants on how to lower risks and detect early stages of breast cancer.
Sponsors for the event include companies like Kroger, TNG Worldwide, The Suburban Collection Showplace, and Chevrolet, which is rounding up 200 of its employees to walk this year. “Making Strides Detroit really brings the Chevrolet team together because so many in our family have been affected by this disease,” says Johanne Pearson, Chevrolet’s digital field integration manager and a breast cancer survivor. “It means a lot to me when my family participates in the walk. MSABC is a great way to stick it to breast cancer.”
Starting with an opening ceremony that will recognize individuals who have dedicated their time to fighting breast cancer, the walk will cross onto major historic streets like Woodward Avenue and Lafayette Boulevard. The route also passes through the Belt, the former downtown garment district alley that now features work by Library Street Collective artists, suspended string lights, and trendy bars like Deluxx Fluxx.
In the last 20 years, Detroit’s MSABC event — the fourth largest walk in the nation — has collected more than $14 million for the cause, with $1.2 million being raised last year. Two more MSABC walks are also taking place later this month in nearby Rochester and Ann Arbor on Oct. 27. Walkers can register for the Detroit walk as well as other local events online. For those who have not pre-registered, MSABC says prospective participants should visit the check-in area upon arrival.
