Connie Kretschmer and Lori Harrison of Advanced Counseling Services find it an exciting time to be in business in Detroit.

“There is a great deal of growth going on and interest in behavioral health from venture capital investors,” says Harrison. “Our challenge is to be able to grow in a competitive market while maintaining our focus on quality and personalized care.”

Both started as psychotherapists providing mental health treatment for metro Detroit. Within the last ten years, the sisters transitioned into ownership, as COO and CEO, respectively, of the business their father founded in 1988. Kretschmer and Harrison have worked hard to cultivate a culture of integrity while balancing the needs of the company, employees, and consumers.

As an organization, Advanced Counseling Services provides outpatient mental health and chemical dependency treatment. It has endured recessions and the challenges facing health care, and more specifically, mental health.

“Health care is a rapidly evolving field, and we have learned the importance of adapting to changes and remaining positive in times of uncertainty,” says Kretschmer.

Both credit their drive and determination from a childhood spent on the ski slopes. “Our father always told us, ‘If you’re not falling, you’re not learning.’ There was no tolerance for whining or giving up, yet just as significant was the importance of teaching and looking out for each other,” says Harrison.

Those essential lessons apply to business as well, and ACS utilizes support and inspiration from its nearly 200 staff members. Kretschmer and Harrison are proud to lead a team at ACS that is experienced and culturally diverse, which adds to the strength of the organization and its ability to serve the community.
