The War Memorial

Set along the shores of Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Farms, The War Memorial is a nonprofit cultural and community center rooted in service, history, and connection. Since 1949, it has served as a living memorial—honoring veterans while welcoming people of all ages to gather, learn, celebrate, and reflect.

What began as a place of remembrance has evolved into a dynamic hub for arts and culture, lifelong learning, patriotic programming, and free community events that engage nearly 100,000 people across Southeast Michigan each year. Through lectures, performances, classes, family programs, and veteran-focused initiatives, The War Memorial creates opportunities for reflection, creativity, and shared civic experience. These efforts are strengthened through partnerships with dozens of regional arts, educational, and service organizations, expanding access and deepening impact.

The organization’s mission comes to life on its lakeside campus, where historic architecture and contemporary design work in harmony. Programs and events take place within the stately Alger House and the Fred M. Alger Center, a modern venue remodeled and expanded in 2022 to enhance cultural programming and community use.

In addition to its mission-driven work, The War Memorial offers elegant and versatile spaces for weddings, celebrations, and corporate gatherings. A grand lakeside ballroom, adaptable meeting rooms, and an in-house culinary team allow the organization to host events ranging from intimate gatherings to large-scale receptions.

Open to all, with no membership or residency requirements, The War Memorial remains what it has always been: a welcoming place where history, community, and inspiration come together—and where everyone belongs.
