The Great Dane Pub opened in December 2025 on Main Street in Royal Oak. Hearing owners Lisa and Mike Dimmer tell their story, it’s clear that success happened despite some snags. Having little experience in the restaurant business, they took a chance on owning a Voodoo Brewing Co. franchise. With the bright sign already up and the paper ready to come off the windows, they were informed of licensing complications with the state.

What to do? The couple raised six children in their 20-plus years together — it’s hard to present them with a situation that would stop them in their tracks. Instead, they pivoted.

“We decided to do our own thing with our family, and the Great Dane Pub just unfolded from there,” says Mike.

“Dane is our son, and the name just seemed to open up to Great Dane, with the idea of green plaid, brick accents, and warm wood finishes for the decor,” says Lisa. “We added floral touches for our daughters — Lilly, Violet, Poppy, Dahlia, and Daisy.”

The final component to lock in the eclectic British pub feel was the food. As the Dimmers solicited advice for the menu, they were fortunate to cross paths with Jared Bobkin, known for his appearances on Hell’s Kitchen. “He imagined it as a place to get fish and chips, bangers and mash, short ribs — traditional pub staples, but with lots of twists,” says Mike.

Coming from a scratch kitchen, those delicious twists include fresh pub pretzels, chicken rigatoni featuring handmade noodles, and several unique pizzas, including buttered chicken and a Stilton and pear pizza. Generous salads, burgers, several vegan options, and a delightful dessert menu featuring a sticky toffee pudding round out the menu.

The intimate dining room seats just under 100 guests, with a lively bar area and a wall of taps. A rotating selection of drafts includes craft beers from Michigan and beyond. The beverage menu also offers craft cocktails, with names like Moonlight Lilly and Velvet Violet — a nod to the Dimmers’ daughters.

Since its opening, the Great Dane Pub has attracted regulars, and Mike and Lisa are not shy about asking patrons what they like and don’t like. “One of our guests suggested we put gravy on the side of the steak and ale pie, and honestly, it made it so much better,” Lisa says. “We value opinions and are always open to making a better experience.”

With an awesome staff ensuring customers have a relaxed date night, a casual evening with friends, or an overdue generational gathering, the Great Dane is all about great food, cold brews, and good company.

“Our aim is to fill a need somewhere between the nightlife bars and the more formal dining spots in Royal Oak,” Mike says. Lisa adds, “I love seeing moms bring babies, too. I love that we can also have a family atmosphere.”

With family at the heart of the Great Dane Pub, it’s no surprise that diners praise the relaxed ambiance and generous portions. It’s a welcoming spot to gather for craft drinks and comfort food.
