Dear Astro-Friends,
Wondering what the stars have in store for 2019? As astrologers and proud metro Detroit natives, we were thrilled when Hour Detroit asked us to peek at the cosmos and see what’s ahead for the Motor City in the New Year.
First and foremost, did you know that every city has its own zodiac sign? Based on its founding date of July 24, 1702, Detroit happens to be a Leo — a sign that is known for being expressive, passionate, and endlessly creative. In astrology, Leo rules the heart, which makes a lot of sense. Regardless of the turmoil that the city has historically faced, “the D” has always been rooted in compassion and a community of people caring about each other.
The city is already in the midst of another renaissance, but in 2019, the buzz of Detroit’s resurgent growth may reach a more worldwide audience. Since Nov. 8, 2018, Jupiter, the planet of global connections, has been helping to put Detroit on an international map. We may see some Eminem- and Aretha Franklin-level performers emerge, and visual artists and disruptive entrepreneurs who are already bringing fame to Detroit are going to make it an even bigger cultural destination in 2019. But the highbrow aspects of the cultural scene may start to chip away at the down-to-earth Midwestern ethos that Detroit has always cleaved to. Fortunately, hardworking Saturn, the planet of industry, will bring a focus to service and community and help to protect longtime Detroiters from the effects of rapid gentrification.

Now, for the outlook on the job market. Uranus, the progressive planet of change, is shaking things up in the city’s career sector. Historically, Detroit has been a supportive city for blue-collar workers, and that won’t change. Last year, the city entered into a three-year cycle that will bring waves of trade-based jobs to the city. Tech companies and medical research labs could also start moving in with a boom. Old-school industries may be forced to modernize. Instead of getting frustrated about new industries entering the landscape, we recommend that Detroiters embrace the spirit of change and discover their place within these markets. For example, are there new bars and restaurants opening up in your area? Perhaps it’s time to consider getting a sommelier certificate or taking a course in hospitality management. Or, see if your employer would be willing to pay for you to be trained on software or advanced technology to help keep your skills sharp.
Romantically, 2019 is an exciting year for Detroiters. While last year’s stars supported nesting, the astrological energy of the New Year will give both couples and singles more reasons to go out and enjoy the city’s burgeoning night life. Sparks could fly between native Detroiters and newcomers moving in from other cities and countries.
Wellness is also an important theme in 2019, and thanks to a posse of planets calling for healthy routines, locals just might feel inspired to embrace a fitness transformation. Go skating in Hart Plaza or take a bike tour around the city when it warms up. Anything involving dancing and moving your hips gets a thumbs-up from the cosmos. The only catch? In a city that loves its large portions, you might have a tendency to overindulge in food. So, share those plates!
That’s our 2019 roadmap for the city where it’s perfectly acceptable to be different. Detroit has always had this spaciousness, which makes it a fertile ground for self-expression. This year is for creating structures that support artists and innovators for years to come.

FIRE
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
As an appreciator or a maker, this is a year of creativity and a great time to get involved in the arts scene. Musicians should find places to jam and perform live. Artists should team up with retailers, bars, and restaurateurs to see if they will present your work. This is also a great year to travel and be more adventurous with your social plans.
EARTH
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
2019 is a year of both stability and transition. You may decide to bow out of activities that are taking up too much of your time, without bringing enough reward. Simultaneously, you will open up space in your calendar for meaningful connections and perhaps, a spiritual practice. Finding work you love is also a theme, which might even lead you to a specialized training or back to school.
AIR
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Social air signs have always put people first, and 2019 is no exception. Meaningful relationships are the way for air signs to find their happiness and success in 2019. Forge new friendships, put energy into romantic relationships, and find a community group where you can give back and feel like you’re among extended family.
WATER
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Career is the name of the game in 2019. However, empathetic water signs feel everything really deeply, so they don’t prioritize growth at the expense of other human beings. These are the people that can help new Detroit and true Detroit come together. You might even start a business — or spearhead an initiative at your place of work — that provides economic opportunities for Detroit’s longtime residents.
