Stevie Wonder is marking the 50th anniversary of his landmark 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life with a world tour, and two shows are booked for Detroit.
The Detroit stops on the tour will take place Dec. 8 and 9 at the Fox Theatre. Tickets for these shows go on sale Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. via 313presents.com, LiveNation.com, and Ticketmaster.com.
During this tour, Wonder will perform Songs in the Key of Life in its entirety. In addition to Detroit, Wonder’s tour will take him to New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and more. A full list of tour dates is below.
A Brief History of Songs in the Key of Life
Released in Sept. 1976, Songs in the Key of Life is Wonder’s 18th studio album. The 17-track double LP was also originally released with a four-track bonus EP. Among the album’s tracks are some of Wonder’s most enduring hits, including “Sir Duke,” “Isn’t She Lovely,” “I Wish,” “As,” and “Another Star.” Of those songs, “Sir Duke” and “I Wish” were No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The album was a massive hit upon its release, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart and topping that chart for 14 weeks. It was nominated for seven Grammy Awards and won four, including the coveted Album of the Year honor. The album went on to be certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2005 for being a double album selling over five million copies in the United States.
In the 50 years since its release, Songs in the Key of Life has collected countless other accolades. Among them are being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002, being added to the Library of Congress’ Recording Registry in 2005, and ranking No. 4 on Rolling Stone’s 2023 edition of its “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list.
