Shinola’s latest release pays homage to “the godfather of snowboarding:” Jake Burton Carpenter. The founder of Burton Snowboards, Carpenter passed in November 2019 from cancer at the age of 65. Now, in honor of his legacy and in time for his birthday — Carpenter was born on April 29, 1954 — the Detroit luxury goods company has teamed up with Burton to debut the limited-edition Jake Burton Carpenter Shinola Gift Set.

The gift set includes a replica of the Burton Backhill, the brand’s first production board that was nicknamed the BB1; a Shinola Great Americans Series stainless steel watch that features an image of Carpenter riding the BB1 etched onto its back and his initials on the front; and 13: The Story of Jake Burton Carpenter, a hardcover coffee table book that features images and stories from world-class photographers and Carpenter’s friends and family. The book and watch are packaged in a Leather Cooler Bag that features the Shinola and Burton logos.

Intended to capture Carpenter’s passion for innovative products and attention to detail, the gift set was created in collaboration with his close friends and family.  “It all started with my youngest son Timi talking to Shinola founder and Jake’s close friend, Tom Kartsotis, about dedicating a Shinola Great Americans Series watch to Jake,” says Donna Carpenter, wife of Carpenter and owner of Burton, in a press release. “The vision for the project grew exponentially from there. We were all deep in the grieving process, so working on this together was cathartic and helped us stay close to Jake. The end result is a true reflection of Jake’s passion, creative spirit, and pure love of life.”

Customers can purchase the gift set, which retails for $,1200, at select Shinola and Burton stores and on the retailer’s respective websites. You can also visit Burton’s site for more stories about Carpenter and his legacy.
