Evolving Home Design to our Evolved Lifestyle

The pandemic has changed life as we know it. Almost overnight, our homes have become not only the place we eat, relax and sleep but  also the place we work, exercise, entertain and where many children attend school. Many of our clients have shifted their focus (and budgets) from outside activities and traveling to making their homes the haven they’ve always dreamed about.

Through the course of the last year, design has become more and more important in the shift in our new lifestyles. With an emphasis on function, health and adaptability in the home, partnering with a good designer is essential in making sure your home design goals are met.

As you consider how to maximize the space in your home, here are a few tips to keep in mind from our Dream Team of Designers.

Homework for the kids and the adults

In the past, a home office was often viewed as a luxury. While it wasn’t a necessity to have a home office, it was nice to have when paying bills, shopping online and storing important documents. Through this global pandemic the home office has taken on a totally different priority. With a large percentage of our population still working from home, and some with no plans to return to the office, why not bring the functionality from your work office into your home office?

An organized office is not just about how it looks, it’s also about function, comfort and efficiency. Incorporating cabinetry provides you with ample storage opportunities to store things like printer paper, reference books and files. Adding strategic shelving units or floating shelves is an ideal way to take advantage of vertical space and can also add eye-catching design elements. A space that’s productive but also aesthetically pleasing can make you more productive, while adding comfort into your day.

    Traveling in your own backyard

This year, outdoor living was more important than ever. Getting outside is healthy, and a great place to entertain. Focusing future design efforts on your outdoor space can add value to your home and comfort for your family.

You may already have a deck, patio or pergola in your backyard that makes al fresco dining possible, but what if you took things to the next level and brought your kitchen outdoors as well? Outdoor kitchens can be customized to large or small outdoor spaces and incorporate function to your specific needs. Are you a pizza loving family? Why not include an outdoor stone-fired pizza oven? Perhaps you’re a beer connoisseur that would love an outdoor kegerator and bar seating? There’s no shortage of options when it comes to designing your outdoor kitchen, so think big. Built-in grills, lighting, sinks, and appliances are all possible. Imagine what an outdoor kitchen will do to your social life this year!

    Organized Calm

Because this is such an unpredictable and chaotic time, people are craving the need for more organization in their homes. It is no surprise why, with organization comes tranquility and calm. Whether it be sparking joy like Marie Kondo, or the rainbow approach with The Home Edit, incorporating well-designed storage into your closets, pantries or mudrooms can bring a serious sense of calm to your home.

Right now, your home is more important than it’s ever been. Make your time at home more functional and comfortable by investing into your home sanctuary. Home is no longer only where the heart is… it’s where everything is.
