In Metro Detroit’s dining scene, few things are as powerful as a family legacy.

For nearly a decade, Arkins Sweet BBQ in Southfield has built a devoted following with its slow-smoked brisket, fall-off-the-bone ribs, and welcoming atmosphere. Founded by Arkan Karana, the restaurant became known not only for its barbecue but also for the passion and personality behind every meal. Karana, who opened the restaurant after years of perfecting his craft, earned a reputation for doing things his own way—focusing on quality ingredients, patience, and recipes developed through countless hours at the smoker.

Customers quickly became regulars, drawn not only by the food but by the sense of community that Arkan cultivated. Whether guests stopped in for lunch, picked up dinner for the family, or ordered catering for a special event, they were greeted with the kind of warmth that transformed first-time visitors into loyal supporters. For many, Arkins Sweet BBQ became more than a restaurant—it became part of their routine and a gathering place for family and friends.

When Arkan passed away, the future of the beloved business was uncertain. But for his wife, Reem Karana, there was never any question about what came next.

Today, Reem leads Arkins Sweet BBQ, carrying forward the vision her husband built while guiding the restaurant into a new chapter. Her mission is simple: preserve the traditions customers love while ensuring the family business continues to thrive for future generations.

“Every day, we’re honoring what Arkan created,” says Reem. “The recipes, the standards, the way we treat our customers—those things remain at the heart of everything we do.”

Stepping into a leadership role after the loss of a spouse comes with challenges, but Reem has approached the responsibility with determination and purpose. While the restaurant remains rooted in the foundation Arkan established, she has embraced the opportunity to continue growing the business while maintaining the values that helped make it successful.

That commitment is evident from the moment guests walk through the door. The menu continues to feature the restaurant’s signature smoked meats, including the brisket that helped put Arkins on the map and earned praise from local food lovers. Every item reflects the attention to detail that customers have come to expect, from carefully prepared sides to barbecue that is smoked low and slow.

But the story of Arkins Sweet BBQ has always been about more than barbecue.

It’s about family. It’s about resilience. And it’s about the connections that form around a great meal.

Under Reem’s leadership, the restaurant has remained a gathering place for loyal regulars while welcoming a new generation of customers discovering the Southfield favorite for the first time. She has also become an increasingly visible face of the business, representing the brand throughout the community and sharing her passion for barbecue with customers old and new.

For Metro Detroiters, supporting local restaurants often means supporting the families behind them. Independent businesses help define the character of neighborhoods, create jobs, and serve as gathering places where memories are made. Arkins Sweet BBQ is a reflection of that spirit—a locally owned restaurant built through hard work, perseverance, and a genuine love for serving others.

Every order tells a story of dedication and commitment. Every brisket sliced, and every rack of ribs served carries forward a legacy that began with Arkan’s vision and continues through Reem’s leadership.

As Arkins Sweet BBQ looks ahead, one thing remains unchanged: the belief that great food brings people together.

And thanks to Reem Karana’s dedication, the fire that Arkan started continues to burn.
