Benzie County is home to lovely inland lakes, picturesque towns, emerald rolling hills, the multi-recreational Crystal Mountain, and 25 miles of Lake Michigan coastline. You cannot miss out on exploring what Benzie County has to offer this season. Plan the perfect “Tour de Benzie” with the top summer activities listed below.

    Lighthouse Exploration

Dive into the county’s history by making trips to the Point Betsie Lighthouse and Frankfort North Breakwater Lighthouse. Both originally built in the 1800s, the lighthouses have served as guides for many maritime travelers over the centuries. The Point Betsie Lighthouse offers tours, shopping, the Boathouse Museum, and even the opportunity to spend a night in the lighthouse and immerse yourself in the life of a lighthouse keeper. The Frankfort Lighthouse is located at the end of a pier that extends into Lake Michigan; visitors can walk the pier all the way to the historic light. Insider tip: The pier is an amazing place to take in a stunning, panoramic sunset.

    Golf Outing at Crystal Mountain

Head over to Crystal Mountain, a Northern Michigan hub for year-round recreation, for a world-class round of golf. Crystal boasts 36 holes of championship golf, with both courses earning a prestigious four-star rating from Golf Digest. The Betsie Valley course has been recently renovated to create a more scenic backdrop for golfers and the chance to post a lower score. The Mountain Ridge course offers sweeping views from high elevations and winds throughout the pines. Looking to improve your game? Crystal Mountain has a Golf Learning Center and a Golf School for players of all ages and experience levels.

Hike at Michigan Legacy Art Park

Within the Crystal Mountain grounds is the Michigan Legacy Art Park, a special place that uniquely blends nature and art. The Art Park consists of a 30-acre forest preserve, over 50 works of art, 2 miles of hiking trails, and an outdoor amphitheater. The park hosts guided tours for students and adults as well as events, such as the Summer Sounds concert series, at the amphitheater. The permanent collection of art brings the culture and history of Michigan to life in a beautiful natural setting, creating a one-of-a-kind enrichment opportunity.

    Beach Day at Frankfort Beach

Nothing says “summer” like a beach day on Lake Michigan. Frankfort Beach provides a premier beach day experience with golden sands, sparkling waters, and views of the twin piers and the Frankfort Lighthouse. ADA walkways allow beach access, and there are benches for accessible seating. Within a short walking distance of downtown Frankfort, this beach has everything you need.

    Crystal Lake Alpaca Farm

If you are searching for a fun and funky family outing, look no further than the Crystal Lake Alpaca Farm. The full-service veterinary alpaca farm has a boutique full of high-quality alpaca fleece items. Located on 145 acres, the farm is home to 60 alpacas and around 15 crias (baby alpacas) that produce elite fleece for the handcrafted products featured in the boutique. Many of the Crystal Lake alpacas are award-winning National Alpaca Show champions. Visitors are always welcome at the Animal Park, where they can interact with both alpacas and miniature donkeys. Alpaca grain is available to purchase to feed the adorable animals.
