Summer is Coming… and Lake Michigan Awaits

This summer, c’mon up to Traverse City and Lake Michigan; it’s a short drive north that you will not regret.

Don’t let summer pass you by without visiting Traverse City and getting out on the big lake. Lakeside leisure is within your reach, with only a short drive between the Detroit area and Traverse City. The clear, sparkling waters of Lake Michigan are waiting for you to dive in, float on, and set sail all summer long.

    Traverse City Tall Ships

Experience the big lake through a unique, historical lens on one of Traverse City’s tall ships. Tall ships played an integral role in the trading and transporting of goods in centuries past and are a hallmark of Michigan maritime history. There are four operating schooners in the TC area; two that are considered “floating classrooms” and two that provide relaxing excursions that integrate local food and drink. In fact, no other port in Michigan has as many tall ships sailing through their waters today. The Inland Seas Education Association provides an educational sailing experience that focuses on the Great Lakes ecosystem, during which you will act as a scientist and a sailor. The Wind Dancer is a 63-foot schooner that graces the waters of Grand Traverse Bay and features a variety of tranquil and adventurous sails from midday until sunset. The Traverse City Tall Ship Co. invites you to “Sail Your True North” aboard the Tall Ship Manitou. The Manitou offers cuisine-centered cruises, learning-based sails, and experiences meant to entertain. Book your Traverse City tall ship adventure today!

    Kayak, Canoe, & SUP

Get up close and personal with Lake Michigan this summer. Kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards allow you to enjoy the natural beauty of our area firsthand and they are available to rent everywhere. These activities also add an element of exercise, allowing you to pump up your endorphins and truly de-stress on the lake. If it is your first time paddling, you may feel more comfortable in a canoe due to its stability, open decks and high sides. If you’re looking for something nimbler and more responsive to the water a kayak is an excellent choice. Another adventure to consider is stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), which has taken over Traverse City with its popularity. Take the lake by storm on your paddleboard… just don’t be afraid of an unexpected dip in the waves!

    Nauti-Cat

All aboard the catamaran Nauti-Cat! Set sail on West Grand Traverse Bay, with scenic views of both the Old Mission Peninsula and the Leelanau Peninsula; Traverse City’s wine country. With four cruises daily, you are sure to find one that fits into your summer schedule. In chronological order, the experiences include the Noon Cruise, the Windjammer Cruise, the Happy Hour Cruise, and the Champagne Sunset Cruise. The Nauti-Cat also offers various specialty cruises throughout the summer, like the Fireworks Cruise and the Burlesque Show Cruise. The catamaran itself is the largest commercial sailing catamaran on the Great Lakes and boasts a passenger capacity of 49, making it perfect for a private charter for a larger group, as well.

    Beach & Swim

Nothing says summer like a beach day – especially a Northern Michigan beach day. With numerous public beaches along the coast of Lake Michigan, there is always a place for you and your friends and family to lay down your towels and set up a picnic. Swim through the freshwater and take in the panoramic views. Hitting the beach and getting in the water are wonderful ways to enjoy the lake for free.
