Top 20 Most Dangerous Intersections in Metro Detroit

You might pass through Michigan’s most risky intersections more often than you think.

Michigan Auto Law, a metro-Detroit based law firm that specializes exclusively in handling auto accident cases, released a list of the most dangerous intersections in the state to make drivers aware of the potential danger on July 2.

By collecting and analyzing 2023 data from the Michigan State Police, attorneys at Michigan Auto Law were able to identify the top 20 most dangerous intersections in Michigan. Their goal is to provide drivers with information that allows them to make better decisions for themselves and their families, which may especially come in hand this Fourth of July weekend, where an estimated 2.6 million Michigan residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more from their home this year.

The crash data encompasses traffic incidents that occurred within 200 feet of an intersection, including near freeways, divided highways, and rural roads. According to the law firm, approximately one-third (30%) of all fatal motor vehicle accidents in Michigan occur at intersections.

Michigan Auto Law has set out to spread their message by launching a safety campaign, which includes placing billboards near many critical intersections that usually appear on the list each year.

  1. **11 Mile Road/I-696 at Van Dyke Avenue, Warren/Center Line, 218 Total Crashes, 52 Injuries
    • The total number of crashes increased 68.9% over the last five years, jumping from 129 in 2019 to 218 in 2023. 
  1. **Martin Parkway at N. Pontiac Trail, Commerce Township, 160 Total Crashes, 11 Injuries (Roundabout)
    • Total crashes increased by 26.9% between 2022 to 2023, increasing from 126 to 160, moving this intersection up from its third-place position in 2022.
  1. **Schoolcraft Road at Telegraph Road, Redford Township, 154 Total Crashes, 47 Injuries
    • Total crashes from 2022 to 2023 increased by 22% from 126 to 154 with the highest number of injuries reported during the last five years. 
  1. **18 1/2 Mile Road at Van Dyke Avenue, Sterling Heights, 135 Total Crashes, nine Injuries (Roundabout)
    • Total crashes in 2023 are down 41% from 229 in 2019, when this crossroad was number one on the list of Michigan’s Top 20 Most Dangerous Intersections.  
  1. Orchard Lake Road at 14 Mile Road, Farmington Hills, 132 Total Crashes, 12 Injuries (Roundabout)
    • Total crashes more than doubled in 2023, jumping from 64 in 2022 to 132 in 2023.
