The WNBA is Returning to Detroit
The last time Detroit had a WNBA team was 16 years ago. Now, they’re coming back in 2029, following the WNBA’s announcement on June 30 that they will be adding three new teams to its league in Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Detroit. Once home to the Detroit Shock, which had won three WNBA titles between 2003 and 2008, local basketball fans will finally once again watch their women’s basketball team play on the court. “Today marks the long-hoped-for return of the WNBA to a city with deep basketball roots and a championship tradition,” Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores, who led the WNBA bid, said. Although the Detroit Free Press says Sophie Cunningham, a player for the Indiana Fever, is unsure if players will be excited to go to Detroit, we know metro Detroiters are excited to cheer them on.
