New Metro Detroit Restaurants, Bars, and Cafés
Street Beet, Detroit
On Dec 11, Street Beet finally debuted its brick-and-mortar in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. The plant-based comfort eatery has developed a strong following among vegetarians and vegans during its years as a pop-up. It has even attracted diners like comedian Tim Robinson, who attended its Leftovers & Coneys event in late November.
Located in the former Bobcat Bonnies space, the new storefront includes a dining room, a bar serving non-alcoholic drinks, and a decent-sized area with pinball machines and other retro games from Offworld Arcade. A separate coffee counter is also opening soon.
Current beverage offerings include several mocktails and shakes. Dirty sodas are also on the menu — if you’re unfamiliar: fountain pop “spiked” with cream or other flavors. The Utah staple, which originated in the Mormon community, has become an internet trend in recent times and seems to be finally gaining some commercial traction in metro Detroit.
Street Beet’s dinner menu includes many popular entrees from when it was a pop-up, like the smashburger and Supreme Crunchywrap. Other options include a vegan coney dog, Braised Green Melt, and chicken sandwich. Plus don’t miss the fries, available five ways: regular, chili cheese, animal style, hot, or nacho. 1800 Michigan Ave., Detroit; streetbeet.online
Joe Louis Southern Kitchen, Southfield

In Detroit, legendary boxer Joe Louis had an arena named after him, as well as one of the city’s most recognizable monuments, “The Fist.” But Louis also has a restaurant named after him, specializing in “the first” — the first meal of the day, that is. And that’s none other than breakfast and brunch spot Joe Louis Southern Kitchen.
On Dec. 9, the Detroit eatery officially opened its second location in Southfield. From 7 a.m. to 3 p.m daily, the restaurant is serving up Southern-style breakfasts like bananas foster French toast, shrimp and grits, and The Brown Bomber: buttermilk biscuits with turkey gravy. In January, the eatery plans to unveil a bar serving mimosas and bloody marys, plus a gift shop that will feature Joe Louis merchandise.
The boxing legend’s son, Joe Louis Barrow II, is co-CEO of the company. “My father’s legacy is so strong throughout Detroit and the surrounding communities, we’re excited to feature commemorative items for purchase at our checkout counter — offering people the chance to take home a piece of that legacy after sharing a delicious meal together,” Louis Barrow II said in a press release. 29649 Northwestern Highway, Southfield; joelouissouthernkitchen.com
