Michigan’s Largest Wind Park is Now Operational

DTE Energy has announced that Meridian Wind is now up and running. The wind park spans across three townships in Midland and Saginaw counties and can power more than 78,000 homes with clean energy generated by 77 wind turbines.

New Speakeasy restaurant opens in West Bloomfield

Knock Twice Speakeasy opened its doors on April 15. The eatery will open in phases until it includes an indoor restaurant, patio space, and cigar bar. The menu of American small plates features salmon bites, vegan tacos, vegetarian ravioli, and dessert. 

Alpino Restaurant in Corktown announces opening date

The European Alps-inspired restaurant will open in the spot formerly occupied by Lady of the House on May 1. The long-awaited eatery will feature menu options inspired by traditional dishes in countries along the Alpine Mountains including Austria, France, Germany, Switzerland, and others.

Detroit police release safety plan to address downtown violence

The 12-point plan came less than a week after multiple shootings occurred downtown and includes street closures, curfews, surveillance cameras, undercover officers, illegal gun zones, screening by high-tech metal detectors, and more.

The Henry Ford Museum acquires house where MLK planned Alabama marches

The Dearborn museum has announced that it will move the Selma, Alabama home to Michigan to preserve it. The house, called the Jackson House, was once the home of Dr. and Mrs. Sullivan Jackson and it was the place that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. planned the Selma-to-Montgomery marches of 1965.

Deadly drug-resistant fungal infections on the rise in Michigan hospitals

Candida auris is transmitted through unclean hands and attacks the ears, the bloodstream, and bodily wounds. It has a mortality rate of up to 50% and poses severe health risks to the elderly and people in long-term care facilities or the hospital. There are approximately 190-200 cases in Michigan, including some in metro Detroit.

Two new dining concepts are coming to Downtown Detroit

“Experience Zuzu” and “Upstairs Bar” will open at the 511 Woodward Building in July of 2023. Experience Zuzu is inspired by dining in Miami and Las Vegas and features a menu of Asian cuisine while Upstairs Bar offers a lounge and club that serves craft drinks, small plates, and sushi.

Michigan senators disagree on removal of unenforced law that penalizes unmarried couples living together

The 1931 law makes it a misdemeanor for an unmarried man and woman to live together. Those in favor of striking the law say it will reduce tax burdens placed on unmarried couples and brings the state into modern times. Those opposed to striking it argue the law encourages marriage and “good morals.” The proposal to drop the law passed the Senate and is on its way to the House.

Two Henry Ford cardiologists become first in U.S. to successfully implant tricuspid LuX valve

Dr. Pedro Villablanca and Dr. Brian O’Neill, structural heart interventional cardiologists at Henry Ford Hospital completed the procedure. The new transcatheter tricuspid valve LuX-Valve Plus is a treatment for patients who have symptomatic tricuspid valve disease but are high risk for traditional open-heart surgery.

Man faces murder charges in death of Ann Arbor police oversight commissioner

Jude Walton was found dead inside her home on April 13, after police performed a welfare check. Cause of death has not been released but an unidentified Ann Arbor man has been arrested and charged with her death. Walton was known as a “pillar of the community,” serving as the Ann Arbor Police oversight commissioner and helping the homeless through the nonprofit, Avalon Housing.

Ex-cop who headed the Integrity Unit in Detroit has been sentenced for bribery

Former Detroit Police Lt. John Kennedy was sentenced on April 18 for his role in bribery scandal involving towing referrals. In his former role as the head of the Integrity Unit, Kennedy was charged with investigating violations and misconduct by city employees, including police.

Fashion designer creates new collection inspired by the Detroit Zoo
