The key to maintaining a nude lip? “Lip liner — all the time,” says Melissa Butler, the CEO and founder of Detroit-based vegan cosmetics company The Lip Bar, who opts for liners in warmer tones than her go-to nude lip color. “Liners help create a separation between your face and lips, giving neutral shades more definition.” If you’re wearing a gloss, the added layer of pigment also ensures that your lips will be coated in color should your sheer formula fade away. For the corporate woman attending a business-related cocktail hour, “I always suggest something matte,” Butler says. “She’s not trying to refresh her lipstick when in a boys’ club environment. Matte formulas are packed with pigment and last all day.” While Butler touts matte lip colors for their no-budge nature, she also recognizes that the oft-drying formula isn’t for everyone. “If you’re into more of a moisturizing texture, go for a product with a satin finish.” She recommends adding lip balm to your daily skincare routine and allowing it to absorb for several minutes. “Stains and liquid lipsticks in deep pigments are so great for cocktails season,” Butler says. “If you sleep in them, you’ll wake up in them! That’s the kind of staying power you need to survive networking events where hors d’oeuvres and drinks are going to be passed throughout the night.” Ensuring the longest wear of a liquid formula starts with the proper application. “First, be sure your lips are completely dry — if you apply to wet lips, liquid lipsticks will become splotchy.” In other words: Hold off on your drink of choice until after you’ve put the finishing touch on your makeup regimen.
