Shopping in downtown Detroit has an especially festive look this year — and that’s thanks to the help of some budding local artists.

On Thursday, Nov. 13, students from the College of Creative Studies, Bedrock, and local businesses came together to unveil a vibrant series of holiday-themed window displays along Woodward Avenue in Detroit.

Titled “Windows on Woodward,” the project features custom-designed storefront installations created through collaborations with CCS students and local Bedrock retail tenants. These tenants include the Lip Bar, Bonobos, 6 Salon, Born in Detroit, and Woodhouse Day Spa.

The walkable window showcase spans Woodward Avenue between the 1200 to 1400 blocks. Starting at Bonobos, visitors are invited to explore a visually engaging holiday experience. For the CCS students involved, the decorated window displays offer real-world design opportunities. This allows them to gain experience under professional mentorship and apply their creative skills in a public setting.

Details on the “Windows on Woodward” Displays

Each retailer’s window display reflects a different artistic vision. Born in Detroit highlights local pride with large 2D Christmas ornaments hanging in the windows. The round ornaments are printed with images of beloved Detroit landmarks. Among these landmarks are the Fox Theatre and the Christmas tree at Campus Martius.

The Lip Bar features a striking mountain range in shades of pink and red, compete with a stylized ski lift running the length of the windows, evoking the look of paper cut artwork.

6 Salon transformed its doors into an enormous gift box, partially unwrapped to allow passersby a glimpse inside.

At Bonobos, windows were transformed into a serene winter wonderland, with the store’s mannequins posed against the backdrop of a snowy forest. Woodhouse Day Spa completes the showcase with a classic holiday scene featuring elegant gold-wrapped presents arranged under a Christmas tree.
