Consumers Embrace Nonsurgical Cosmetic Options

Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show the upsurge in minimally-invasive cosmetic treatments far outnumbers that of surgical procedures. Given the choice, it’s likely that most people would opt for injectables and light – or energy – based treatments rather than go under the knife. We want a younger, fresher look in the fastest time and with the least discomfort.

But even the most popular no-downtime procedures will not fit everyone. Fortunately, medical and technological advances have led to an expansive array of options. For you, that may include an energy based therapy to tighten the skin, or a minimally invasive cosmetic gum procedure for a more beautiful smile. The trend to address facial aging is the early use of protective skin products and nonsurgical “face-lift” treatments to delay the need for surgery.

Work with a board-certified plastic surgeon or other medical professional to choose cosmetic treatments that will produce the optimal results you desire.

Q: Is there anything I can do to get rid of the dark lines or unevenness of my gums?

A: The gums frame the teeth, much like a picture frame frames a picture. If the frame is slanted, the picture isn’t as attractive. Likewise, uneven gums, too much gum tissue, not enough gum tissue, and the discoloration of gum tissue can mar your smile. Dr. Mitchell Milan utilizes the latest noninvasive and minimally-invasive techniques to correct problems with the gums quickly and virtually painlessly.

“We use lasers to sculpt excess gum tissue. For patients with receding gums, we can extend the gumline using the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST), which is performed through a tiny pinhole above the patient’s gumline. With PST, there are no incisions, stitches, or a long healing period.”

A dark and unsightly discoloration at the gumline can be due to ill-fitting crowns, old crowns that contain metal, or the dark root of a root canal that appears through the translucent gum tissue.

“Discoloration can be corrected with laser technology or by replacing the old crowns with all-porcelain restorations. The dark root from a root canal can be masked,” Dr. Milan says. “Often, people just accept their smile as-is because they don’t think their dental problems can be corrected. With modern materials and technology there are more great solutions than ever before, so it’s never too late to improve your smile.”

Q: I’d like a fresher, more youthful appearance without having surgery. What would you recommend?

A: While surgery will give you the best results, Viora treatments offer the most advanced, noninvasive solutions for tightening and lifting skin, improving skin quality, contouring unwanted fat, regenerating collagen, and reducing cellulite. The laser-like treatments for both facial and body concerns are quick and more comfortable, and provide significant results with minimal to no downtime.

Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Myra Danish points out that aging is a multidimensional process. “To address aging we need multiple modalities of intervention. I would recommend using good skincare products and wearing sunscreen. Consider having laser facials to treat sun damage. Injections of Botox can address wrinkles and facial lines, while fillers can replace volume in the face. Surgical intervention is the next step to lift, tighten, and rejuvenate sagging skin.”

If surgery isn’t an option, then Viora treatments are the most effective nonsurgical alternatives to regain a younger, healthy, natural look. Learn more at dr.danish.com and viora.com.

Q: What is the advantage of a “gummy bear” breast implant?

A: Unlike the typical silicone breast implant that could leak if ruptured, the highly cohesive, form-stable “gummy” implant contains a thicker, advanced form of silicone that will maintain its shape, says board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Sherbert.

“The silicone gel formula is the consistency of a gummy bear candy, so even if the covering of the implant should wear, there’s no leakage of the silicone. These FDA-approved gummy implants were initially used for reconstructive surgery, as the implants were shaped to resemble a natural breast. Now they also are available as round-shaped, smooth implants, giving women another option for cosmetic breast augmentation.”

Q: What is the latest advancement in laser hair reduction?

A: The Cutera excel HR is the latest technology and offers safe, effective, and comfortable laser hair removal for all skin types. The system has two distinct lasers that operate on two different wavelengths.

“It works on all skin colors and even on people with tanned skin,” says board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ellen Janetzke. “The settings allow us to treat all types of hair, from thin to coarse. The laser handpiece has a built-in cooling device to protect the skin and to reduce any discomfort, so treatments are virtually pain-free.”

Excel HR treatments are faster than other laser hair removal options and patients have no downtime.

“Our new laser can also ‘erase’ tiny facial veins and superficial pigment, like brown spots from sun exposure,” adds Dr. Ellen, the first doctor in Michigan to have the Cutera excel HR system.

If you’re tired of waxing, shaving, or plucking unwanted hair, call Dr. Ellen today to schedule a personalized consultation.
