Q: How can I get a great new smile without feeling discomfort in the dental chair?
A: If you could fall asleep wrapped in a warm blanket on a soft Tempur-Pedic cushion and wake up to a younger, healthier, beautiful smile, would you do it? That’s how easy it can be to transform your smile at the award-winning Cosmetic Dentistry Institute.
For people who are apprehensive about going to the dentist, sedation dentistry is a wonderful solution. “You can be completely relaxed while having a series of complex dental problems taken care of in as little as one visit. Sedation also is great if you have pain in areas of your body that make it difficult to sit in a dental chair,” says Dr. Craig Goldin, who has advanced training and certification in IV sedation.
Dr. Craig Goldin is skilled in advanced numbing techniques and dental pain management. He’s trained to help patients with jaw or TMJ pain, chronic headaches, and tooth pain.
“If you’re uncomfortable having your teeth cleaned, be assured that our hygienists are skilled in the use of laughing gas and local anesthesia for a more relaxing experience,” notes Dr. Marcy Goldin, an adjunct clinical lecturer at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. “Our beautiful office is nearly 6,000 square feet of the most advanced dental technology, along with soothing, spa-like amenities. Whatever dental needs you have, your visit will be efficient and high-tech as well as comfortable and painless.”
The Cosmetic Dentistry Institute provides all phases of general, cosmetic, sedation, and implant dentistry, so you can have all of your dental problems conveniently treated in one office.
“We provide an array of the latest techniques, including porcelain veneers, one-visit CEREC porcelain crowns, Invisalign invisible braces, Fastbraces, and dental implants,” says Dr. Craig Goldin, a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, which allows him to both place and restore state-of-the-art implants. “Whether you’re missing one tooth or more, we can replace them with beautiful, natural-looking dental implants that will allow you to smile, chew, and speak more confidently, for a better quality of life.”
“If you have multiple dental health concerns — damaged teeth, alignment issues, overgrown or swollen gums — we can rebuild a comfortable, functional bite and a healthy, attractive smile with full-mouth reconstruction,” Dr. David Whalen adds. “Through a combination of restorative procedures, you can have the picture-perfect smile you deserve in only two visits.”
The Cosmetic Dentistry Institute is your source for excellence in dentistry and unparalleled patient care and comfort.
Q: The cellulite and dimpling on my thighs and buttocks won’t go away no matter what I do. Is there a nonsurgical treatment that delivers long-term results?
A: Cellfina is the only FDA-cleared, minimally invasive procedure to significantly improve the appearance of cellulite for at least three years.
Using a micro, needle-sized device, Cellfina treats the fibrous connective bands under the skin that cause cellulite. It requires just a single, 45-minute office treatment, and provides significant rapid improvement — you’ll have smoother, healthier-looking skin in as little as three days, with minimal downtime. Those who have already tried Cellfina say they experience renewed self-confidence when wearing a bathing suit or shorter hemlines.
Dr. Ellen Janetzke is the first female plastic surgeon in Michigan to offer Cellfina. Call today for more information or to schedule a personalized consultation.
Q: How can you treat gum disease without invasive surgery?
A: One of the latest treatment options starts with a microscope. Dr. Joseph Nemeth is the first periodontist in Michigan to be trained and certified in the “Cure for Periodontal Disease,” a nonsurgical therapy developed by Montreal dentist Dr. Mark Bonner.
“We use a microscope to identify harmful bacteria that are causing the gum disease. We clean the teeth, and the patient uses home-care techniques to kill the bacteria and eliminate the disease,” Dr. Nemeth explains. “We don’t have to cut or stitch the gums. It’s really remarkable.”
Dr. Nemeth also uses LANAP laser-based therapy to painlessly treat gum disease, targeting the source of inflammation without removing any healthy gum tissue.
“LANAP not only stops gum disease, it’s the only laser cleared by the FDA for the regeneration of bone and soft tissue that has been destroyed by the disease process,” he says.
Dr. Nemeth was the first periodontist in the state to be trained and certified in the minimally invasive Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique, which is used to lengthen receding gums with no incisions or stitches. For patients with a “gummy” smile, Dr. Nemeth recontours the excess gum tissue so the teeth look appropriate and beautiful.
“It’s very exciting that we can help our patients enjoy a healthier and more attractive smile using these ‘ultra’ minimally invasive techniques,” he says.
Q: My lower face and neck are starting to look saggy. Is there an effective treatment that doesn’t require a lengthy recovery?
A: For patients with loose skin in the neck and jawline, and those who have noticed that jowls are beginning to form, the ideal remedy is a mini-lift, says facial plastic surgeon Dr. Myra Danish.
“The mini-lift is a one-hour surgery that doesn’t require general anesthesia. Local anesthesia is required, and patients are made more comfortable with mild oral sedation. In one hour, I am able to tighten the muscles and remove excess skin to give you a sharp jawline and a smooth neck,” she says.
“This is an extremely popular procedure, as it is far less invasive than a face-lift. In fact, patients go home the same day. The downtime is about a week, (and patients may experience) some bruising and swelling that can easily be disguised with your hair and a scarf. Most patients can go about their daily activities because the discomfort is minimal.”
Each person’s facial anatomy and degree of aging differ. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Danish to learn the best treatment options to restore your natural beauty.
Q: Can physical therapy help my TMJ pain?
A: When treating TMJ (temporomandibular joint syndrome), the specially trained physical therapists at Team Rehab analyze a patient’s posture, look for dysfunctions in the patient’s neck, and examine the range of motion of the jaw to detect where the TMJ stems from; this helps them as they develop an individualized program of treatment for each patient.
Physical therapy treatments may include ultrasound, moist heat, ice, stretching, and exercises that improve posture and muscle strength. Manual therapy can be used to relax the muscles of the neck and face, to relieve any stiffness in the muscles of the jaw and neck. Physical therapists may also work on the muscle structures inside the mouth, to move the temporomandibular joint out of a compressed state and into a painless state of rest. Team Rehab therapists can ease your TMJ pain.
Q: How is Pain Free Life Centers’ laser technology changing pain management for women?
A: Pain Free Life Centers of Michigan has been the leader in the use of medical lasers to treat people suffering from chronic pain. In the course of treating patients with an exclusive high-dose laser therapy program, they’ve seen numerous pain conditions effecting women resolved with very positive outcomes.
Women generally have higher pain tolerances than men, and by the time they schedule a visit, their quality of life has often become significantly diminished. Conditions such as fibromyalgia, pelvic pain, and childbirth-related spinal problems are difficult to treat with drugs and surgery; patients with these conditions are often very frustrated by the time they find Pain Free Life Centers of Michigan.
Pain Free Life Centers offers a drug-free, nonsurgical alternative for pain management. Laser treatments are superior to other modalities because the laser is able to treat the pain directly at its source. Experience the benefits of an FDA-cleared laser therapy program for yourself. The team at Pain Free Life Centers of Michigan is so confident in what they do, your first consultation and treatment are absolutely free. Make Pain Free Life Centers your first choice, not your last resort.
Q: I’m all stressed out. How can I manage my busy life?
A: Stress and depression levels have grown from bad to worse as many women are multitasking — juggling a career, marriage, children, older parents, and home.
“They’re not allowing time for themselves in this rush to do everything else to perfection,” says bariatric/internal medicine physician Dr. Gina Randhawa. “Many women get so busy that they put off having a Pap smear, mammogram, and colonoscopy. Out of 365 days, you can make time for these important preventive tests.”
Dr. Randhawa points out that stress can lead to unhealthy eating habits, which can lead to weight gain and more stress and depression. She has noticed that women, particularly younger women, are smoking more than men.
“Whether that’s because they believe it’s going to help with stress or keep their weight down, or they think it looks cool, women — especially of childbearing age — should quit for so many health reasons,” she says.
“I recommend meditation and relaxation to help calm nerves. Studies show that even 20 minutes of exercise is all you need to improve your mood,” Dr. Randhawa adds. “Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, and don’t feel guilty about doing things you love to do, whether that’s reading, cooking, or some other hobby. Having some ‘me time’ every day is very important.”
Q: What is the best way to optimize and maintain your health and beauty as you age?
A: The easy answer is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy.
As we age, levels of all of our vital hormones decline, leading to hormone imbalance. Optimal hormone levels are essential for health and quality of life. Balancing hormones with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy results in significant improvements in fat loss; muscle tone; muscle mass and strength; skin integrity, including the reduction of wrinkles; energy levels; sex drive; sexual function and orgasms; sleep; memory and concentration; emotional well-being and stability; mood; the immune system; inflammation; blood glucose levels; blood pressure; cholesterol levels; bone strength; vision; reduction of menopause symptoms; and much more.
Dr. George Shanlikian, medical director of Genemedics, is a national leader in the field of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and preventive health. He is a pioneer in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and is one of a few cutting-edge physicians in the country with the expertise to properly balance these hormones. Fellowship trained and board-certified in anti-aging and regenerative medicine, Dr. Shanlikian has helped alleviate symptoms of hormone imbalance in thousands of patients through customized programs of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, nutrition, nutritional supplements, and exercise.

Q: What are the latest fillers for treating lines and creases on the lower face?
A: The next generation of fillers includes three hyaluronic acid gel products that offer better, more natural, and long-lasting results. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. David Balle says the new Juvéderm Volbella XC can be used for fine lines, especially around the mouth.
“Volbella is a great filler for the little vertical lines that sometimes develop above the upper lip, especially in people who smoke. It’s also used for natural lip enhancement, helping to restore a youthful moistness or glossiness to the lip.”
Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne correct the laugh lines (nasolabial folds and marionette lines). Designed with XpresHAn Technology, the gel fillers help support facial expressions so that when you smile, laugh, or frown, you look natural.
“Refyne is a lighter product and provides a medium lifting effect. It’s commonly used to fill more shallow facial wrinkles. Defyne is for deeper laugh lines,” Dr. Balle explains. “All of these new fillers last about one year and integrate well into the skin, so patients don’t have lumps or bumps.
“We have hyaluronic acid in our skin, hair, nails, and bones, which helps to give them structure and support,” Dr. Balle adds. “A hyaluronic acid gel filler works along with that to replace what has been lost.”
Q: What is a fast and easy way to improve my appearance?
A: Start with your smile! A pearly-white smile is beautiful to look at and can greatly improve self-confidence. Consider the Zoom! Chairside Whitening System (Zoom!) for fast, safe, and effective teeth-whitening. Zoom! combines the newest advances in dental technology with proven chemical formulas, which ensures that the bleaching experience is painless and the results are satisfying.
There are many reasons why teeth become stained or discolored, including tobacco use and drinking dark liquids such as red wine, coffee, tea, and cola. However, the aging process and prescription medication use can also cause yellowing and graying.
There are literally hundreds of whitening treatments available in the marketplace, including take-home strips, bleaching toothpastes, and take-home whitening gels. The trouble is, many take-home gels are ineffective and may not elicit the desired results.
Zoom! has many advantages over these other treatments, including:
• All teeth are treated simultaneously
• Treatment times are faster
• Patients get longer-lasting results
• Patients experience reduced sensitivity
• Stains on crowns, veneers, and other restorations can be removed, and
• Zoom! is a safe procedure and treatment.
