Parents are often in the position of feeling like they are forced to choose between (at least) two important features of their children’s education: Either their children receive a good education, normally with a focus on college admissions, test scores, and scholarships, but forced to endure a mediocre spiritual and moral formation or their children are taught in a Christ-exalting, spiritually-rich, joyful, and worshipful formative environment, but their intellectual training is weak or even totally ineffective.

The liberal arts tradition at Bloomfield Christian School (BCS) roots students in Christian piety, teaching students through word and deed what is good, true, and beautiful. Teachers are the curriculum at BCS — pious, curious, and competent, inspiring students to love and become skilled in learning themselves by imitating the love of learning seen in their teachers. The fruit of this instruction and example is seen in the young adults and adults who leave BCS prepared to not merely survive college, career, and adulthood, but who thrive in the world around them. Every student is given the tools of language and the tools of number planted deep in the soil of robust Christian belief and practice.
All graduates are formed by a rigorous and traditional, not trendy, curriculum that includes phonics instruction and generous amounts of reading instruction, formal and informal logic, classical languages, rhetoric, natural and physical science, music, visual art, physical education, theology and Scripture study, culminating in a Senior Thesis – a capstone paper of fifteen pages and an oral and public defense of their research and learning. BCS students are equipped for whatever God may call them to do and possess the humility to learn for a lifetime.
We do all this in a structured and distraction-free environment where students are graced with silence, quiet, and the ability to think. No phones. Handwriting, not typing, is how most assignments are completed. We work hard and take breaks for recovery, including mandated time out-of-doors each day K-12 regardless of the weather. We begin each morning with song, prayer, and gratitude to God for his many gifts.
A slate of athletic, drama, and music activities complement BCS’s academic training and spiritual formation.
Our students are regularly in the community on field trips throughout our JK-12 school and, in the Rhetoric School (Grades 7-12), our students travel and experience their texts and learning in new ways. Trips include travel to the Leelanau Peninsula, Chicago, Washington DC, and – as a capstone trip – to Greece (fully funded for students who matriculate at BCS by 8th grade) for a two-week trip exploring the rich biblical and classical foundations of Western Civilization. Students call it “life changing.”
BCS graduates earn admission to their first-choice colleges and universities at a rate of nearly 100%. As impressive as that is, what’s more impressive is the kind of people our graduates become as adults. They become men and women, fathers and mothers, friends and employers, and fellow believers who are well-formed adults who love Christ and others. Calling BCS a school really doesn’t capture what we’re after. British author G.K. Chesterton said it best last century when he wrote, “Education is not a subject, nor does is deal in subjects, instead it is a transfer of a way of life.”
