Ask a local what the best time of year in Traverse City is, and the answer is unanimous: Fall. When the leaves turn into a technicolor coat of crimson and gold, Sundays are reserved for Lions’ football, and apple cider comes with every meal. It’s an incredible season in northern Michigan, and these are the best ways to enjoy it. Complete every adventure on the to-do list for your most fantastic autumn yet.

    Fall Color Tour

The first thing on the list must be to witness the fall colors that put TC on the map. Traverse City has been recognized as home to some of the most incredible fall foliage in America by many major travel publications (Thrillist, The Pioneer Woman, Midwest Living). Peak colors typically burst in mid-October, but they start to change as early as the beginning of September. Check out the official Fall Color Tour Guide to select your route for this free, family-friendly activity. The bright, amber foliage against the blues of Lake Michigan paints a landscape you won’t forget.

    Frankfort Fall Festival

Celebrate the season’s bounty at the Frankfort Fall Festival on Saturday, October 10. The idyllic port town is known for its lakefront charm and the North Pier Lighthouse, creating the perfect backdrop for the autumnal festivities. The day’s events run the gamut: Expect a riverside 5k, craft fair, parade, live music in the beer tent, pumpkin decorating, cornhole tournament, alpaca petting, and more. Be sure to stay for the famous giant pumpkin drop!

    Chairlift Rides at Crystal Mountain

Next, it’s time to head out to the beautiful Crystal Mountain Resort. Catch a scenic chairlift ride and experience panoramic views of four counties at the summit. Rides are available on select dates, and reservations are recommended in October due to peak foliage colors. Take the chance to soar over the rolling hills of northern Michigan aboard the Buck Quad or Crystal Clipper.

    Zombie Run

The apocalypse is coming…It’s the 18th Annual Zombie Run! A Halloween tradition hosted by Right Brain Brewery, this spooky 5k race will have you running for your life. At 9am on October 31st, undead participants will take off on the 3.1-mile run/walk. Afterwards, stick around for the medal ceremony, costume prize giveaway, music, refreshments, and zombie mingling. Race registration is open now, and all proceeds will go to support TART Trails. Sign up…Or else.

    Bell’s Iceman Cometh Challenge

Do you have what it takes to enter the 2026 Iceman Cometh Challenge? On the first Saturday in November, thousands of athletes will compete in the 30-mile point-to-point mountain bike race, facing all the elements that come with this time of year in Traverse City. Ages range from 1.5 years old to 80 years old, and abilities range from first timers to Olympians. The Iceman is just as fun to watch as it is to ride, so don’t miss the chance to cheer the athletes on during their journey if you plan to leave your bike at home.

    Traverse City Beer Week

Finish autumn off strong with the hoppiest week of the year: Traverse City Beer Week. From November 6-14, local breweries will offer special discounts, deals, and giftings to participants. Download the free TCBW passport for the chance to win prizes as you travel the ale trail. The 2026 theme days and events are still brewing, so keep an eye out for upcoming announcements.

The Ultimate TC Fall Bucket List has one goal—C’mon up, get outside, and enjoy. Do that and make magical memories you’ll want to relive all year long. Book your harvest vacation today.
