Birmingham-resident and award-winning sports reporter Brad Galli won over Michigan’s sports fans in his former role as Sports Director for WXYZ Detroit, and continues to do so with his newest endeavor, The Brad Galli Show. The award-winning sports reporter continues to bring his love of the game (and the local community) to his fans through The Brad Galli Show, which is “built on the trust that the sports industry, teams and over a quarter million followers have in me.” The show’s popularity has certainly been a whirlwind for Galli since its recent launch. “The teams have been great, welcoming us in with credentials and working with me to interview top coaches like Dan Campbell and Tom Izzo, and athletes like Jahmyr Gibbs and Kevin McGonigle.” Just in time for fall, Galli is upping the ante by taking the show international. “I will be traveling to Lions games on the road this year, including the game against the Patriots in Germany,” he says. When he’s not busy reporting the latest sports news, Galli can be found around Birmingham with his wife and two children, helping coach his kids’ sports teams, enjoying a night out, and participating in city events like the annual Holiday Tree Lighting, the weekly Farmers Market and more. “Raising a family in Birmingham has been a wonderful experience. We have terrific neighbors, and our family loves spending time downtown, outside in the parks, and on the local trails.” We chatted with Galli on some of his favorite things to do in the city, and what he likes to wear whether he is on the sidelines for interviews, going for his daily run, or out on the town.
“Flexibility and style shouldn’t be enemies. For so many years, I couldn’t find the right suit — something comfortable enough to move in but stylish enough to wear for live broadcasts,” said Galli who is pictured Work/Co in a State & Liberty suit and dress shirt, and Magnanni’s Harlan leather shoes from Craig Ryan, a look local-stylist Clare Pollard chose for its classic tailoring and comfortable fit. “While I’m not the athlete on the field, I’m certainly not sitting at a desk all day. State & Liberty solved all those issues for me. I’m so impressed with their stylish looks and flexible fabric.” While Galli prefers his suits in navy and gray, he admits his wife actively challenges him to mix things up. “I’m exploring some brighter, different color schemes, and I’m having fun doing it. I like shopping in Birmingham; it has so many options for great staples and creative shops that challenge the norm. Athletes say: ‘Look good, play good.’ Why shouldn’t that apply to the rest of us who wish we were still athletes!?”
When he’s not covering sports, Galli loves to explore Birmingham’s trails which he calls a hidden gem in the city. “I love Quarton Lake, and I spend time walking and running around it every week. The parks and recreation team in Birmingham deserves a standing ovation for what they do throughout the city, especially with the trails.” Here, Galli sports a Donahue jogger, Larkin hoodie, and Harris striped socks from Redvanly, one of Birmingham’s newest shops, as well as New Balance 1080v 15 running shoes from Gazelle Sports – a fit that not only performs well, but can also easily transition from the trail to a smoothie run, thanks to the monochromatic black palette. You can also often find Galli shopping for workout and casual gear at the new Vuori store in Downtown Birmingham.
Movie nights for the Galli family at the Emagine Palladium or Birmingham 8 are a non-negotiable. “We love going to the movies. That often means just my wife and I on a night out together or the entire extended family including our nieces and nephews and parents — I always find and excuse to get some popcorn and watch something new.” For someone in the spotlight as much as Galli even a relaxed family outing warrants a casual look that has some sophistication. A blue cashmere-blend sweater and braided suede belt from Carl Sterr, denim from Caruso Caruso, and sneakers from Allen Edmonds (not pictured) create a look that is comfortable yet still elevated.
With a schedule as busy as Galli’s, it’s equally important to find time for date nights. “We have so many restaurants still to try in Birmingham, but our favorites are Commonwealth for breakfast, Luxe Bar & Grill for burgers, Bistro Joe’s for a family dinner, and this year we celebrated our wedding anniversary at Casa Pernoi,” he said. He and his wife recently dined at Birmingham’s newest restaurant, e Fiori, an upscale Italian restaurant and bottega concept that “everyone must experience.” Dressed for “one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten” Galli dons a refined Scabal shirt jacket, a ultra-soft chambray sport shirt, and suede belt from Carl Sterr along with Mofrère Caine pants from Craig Ryan that feature a premium stretch-fit. An ensemble stylist Pollard says was selected for Galli due to its ability to be both comfortable and refined while also working this season’s timeless heritage trends.
