September in the city means a new season of Lions’ football and the first signs of autumn. It also means the return of Detroit’s Month of Design. The month’s premier event, Murals in the Market, is a weeklong takeover of Eastern Market and the surrounding area for a celebration of mural making, fashion, and all kinds of visual mediums.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the event. The event returns to its Eastern Market roots following two years in the nearby Islandview neighborhood.

The event takes place Sept. 15 – 22, where 16 artists come together to create more than 16 new murals around Eastern Market. The artists also take part in panel discussions and live art installations. Hosted by 1XRun, a Detroit-based art gallery and publisher, Murals in the Market features daily and nightly activations at local spots like UFO Bar and Spot Lite Detroit.

Hour Detroit visited on Thursday (Sept. 18) for the Eastern Market After Dark event, where music, dancing, food, and art all continued late into the evening. The sheds were transformed into popup clothing boutiques, jewelry stores, art galleries, and cocktail bars. DJs were scattered throughout the market and surrounding area, with DJ Problematic Black Hottie playing electronic music on the main stage outside of Shed 2. Over a dozen food trucks gave visitors a chance to sample cuisine from around the world. Options included Creole seafood, Indian street food, Italian wraps, and jerk chicken.

A popup art exhibit in 1XRun’s Mural HQ is on display all week. Works from Detroit artists like Amy Fisher Price and Kelly Golden are featured in the space. The warehouse art gallery also has a bar, so patrons can enjoy drinks while they explore the interactive art pieces.

With live-mural paintings taking place all around Eastern Market, visitors can access an interactive map that displays where each artist is working and how to view their work. The event also provides an opportunity to experience the existing art and mural work that exists in the district.

Created by Design Core Detroit in 2011, the goal of Detroit Month of Design is to honor the city’s legacy as the first and only UNESCO-designated City of Design. This September, 500 creatives will be showcasing their work at 95 different events across Detroit. Some of the highlights include an interactive floral design event at Playground Detroit, a mosaic exhibit at the I.M Weiss Gallery, and a tour of the Shepard’s redesigned grounds in Little Village.
