New Parks Around Metro Detroit

Newly Opened

Eckstein Skate Park, Warren (May 15)

This 45,000-square-foot concrete oasis — Michigan’s largest outdoor skate park — features a pump track, multiple bowls, benches, and rails for skaters and BMXers to shred.

Oak Park Woods, Oak Park (June 22) 

A $6.2 million investment revitalized the northern 17 acres of Shepherd Park into a green space with accessible trails, gathering spaces, and a nature-themed playground.

Rogell Park, Detroit (June 26)

The former site of a golf course in northwest Detroit has transformed into a 98-acre public park complete with biking and walking trails, as well as scenic spots overlooking the surrounding meadows and wetlands.

Pontiac Oaks, Pontiac (July 12)

The former Hawthorne Park received $3 million in funding, used to renovate trails and an accessible kayak launch, expand the playground, open a new pavilion, and redesign the park’s 18-hole disc golf course.

Scott Street Skate Park, Rochester (July 14)

More than a decade after its initial proposal, Rochester’s first outdoor skate park comes to life. Designed and built by legendary skate park builders Spohn Ranch, the skate plaza caters to transition and street skaters alike.

Breaking Ground

Red Run Park, Sterling Heights (May 5)

As part of the city’s ongoing Pathway to Play and Preservation project, construction began to turn this vacant plot of land into an expansive recreation space. The park will feature six pickleball courts, biking and walking paths, basketball courts, heated restrooms, and a dog park. The project is slated for completion by the end of 2026.

Brennan Recreation Center, Detroit (June 25)

Ground broke on a new indoor recreation center on Detroit’s west side following a $20 million investment from Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores. Scheduled for completion in fall 2027, the 25,000-square-foot facility will offer youth programming opportunities and multiuse sports courts.
