One of the best parts of being an adult is not dreading September. I never disliked school, but no kid ever got a thrill from seeing those back-to-school signs pop up in stores as early as July 5.
September is now one of my favorite months, especially here in metro Detroit. In addition to the fair weather, we can enjoy the return of NCAA and Lions football, the Tigers’ race for a post-season spot, Detroit Month of Design’s many events, and the launch of new seasons for our cultural institutions. One exhibition I am especially looking forward to is The World of Anna Sui at Cranbrook Art Museum, which opens in October. I’ve been a fan of the iconic fashion designer since I was a 20-something living in New York City in the ’90s, when Sui helped define the decade’s fashion with creations like baby-doll dresses inspired by Kurt Cobain. In our cover story on page 34, Hour Detroit contributor Dana White (who was also in NYC in the ’90s) spoke to the metro Detroit native about everything from memories of shopping at Hudson’s in downtown Detroit to her first fashion shows in the early ’90s to the thrill she still gets when the hottest celebrities wear her designs.
For this year’s fall fashion feature, Hour’s design team looked for an “elevated, timeless take on fall 2026,” says creative director Lindsay Richards. Our stylist pulled pieces that define the season, including rich autumn tones and luxurious textures focusing on long, lean silhouettes and soft tailoring with defined waists. See how our team created an overall mood of sophistication, effortlessness, and quiet luxury supported by gorgeous photography by Grace Heslip.
