Metro Detroit Food Banks and Services to Support Year-Round

If you or someone you know is food insecure, or you’re interested in helping those in need, consider reaching out to one of these metro Detroit food banks.

The 43-day federal government shutdown impacted millions around the country, including over 1.4 million Michiganders who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. This led to added strain on local food banks due to increased demand.

While the resuming of SNAP benefits is a relief to many, food banks still need help serving their communities during the holiday season, particularly replenishing their stock that took a hit during the shutdown. If you or someone you know is food insecure, or you’re interested in helping those in need, consider reaching out to one of the many metro Detroit food banks and services organized by county below. (Note: Each food bank name will be hyperlinked for more information on their current services.)

Wayne County

Brightmoor Connection Food Pantry

This community outfit has a clothing closet alongside their community pantry at 20740 Grand River Avenue. Inside the building on the north side of the avenue, between Pierson and Braile Streets, they also are a resource for finding transitional housing for women and children. They are open from 2:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday. They aren’t open on the first Monday of every month.

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

There are no requirements to get free food at this soup kitchen at 1820 Mt. Elliot Street in Detroit. They are on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube, can be contacted at cskinfo@cskdetroit.org, or at 313-579-2100.

Detroit Rise Mission Ministries

DRMM has Thanksgiving meals for $2.47. From their 150 Stimson Street base, they run a series of shelters and a food bank at 28571 Gratiot Avenue in Roseville. You can follow them on Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram, call them at 313-993-4700, or email them at info@drmm.org.

Elmwood Blessing Box

Westland’s newest food pantry came into their brick and mortar location just this year. According to WXYZ, this charity was started as a small scale operation for neighbors that Vincent and Elizabeth Freeman noticed were having trouble getting groceries. The demand for help they found was so great that it took over their whole house, and they realized they needed a full time food pantry. The result is standing there and ready to assist you at Unit A, 27543 Joy Road, Westland. Focus: Hope’s Food for Seniors

Food for the Seniors is a global anti-hunger organization. They have a location in Inkster at 759 Inkster Road. They can be reached at food@focushope.edu. Homebound people can dial 313-494-4980 for home delivery. They are open from Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. until noon – without an appointment.

Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan

Their main headquarters is at 2131 Beaufait Street in Detroit’s Islandview neighborhood. If you live in the 48091 or 48234 zip codes, you can also access their new, free produce and dairy market at 4401 East 8 Mile Road in Warren. Make Food Note Waste

Make Food Not Waste repurposes food from local restaurants into weeklong packages of food for families. As Hour Detroit previously reported, they welcome people in the parking lot behind Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church at 8625 East Jefferson Avenue every Friday. Open Door Ministry

This Canton-based church asks that anyone looking for food assistance to dial 734-397-1777 extension 2011. Located at 4301 South Lilley Road, they also have a job finding service, counseling, and job skills training available.

University of Michigan-Dearborn Student Food Pantry

U of M-Dearborn has its food pantry in Suite 2130 A of the Renick University Center. They can be contacted at 313-593-4774 or at dearborndos@umich.edu.

Wayne Metro Community Action Agency

This organization has food programs for seniors, K-5 and teenagers, as well as a diaper distribution system. They have multiple locations across Metro Detroit and are open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. They are on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. Oakland County

Oakland Livingston Human Services Agency

A centralized resource that will provide a centralized guide for food sources and housing across Livingston and Oakland Counties. They’re on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, or LinkedIn, and you can email them at Communications@olhsa.org.

Western Oakland County Meals on Wheels

According to Oakland County, this Meals on Wheels program serves “Berkley, Beverly Hills, Birmingham, Clawson, Ferndale, Franklin, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods, Lathrup Village, Madison Heights, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak, Royal Oak Township, Southfield, and Troy” residents. They have a presence on Facebook and Instagram, and you can contact them at 248-223-9160 or at info@lwmow.org.

National Council of Jewish Women – Kosher Meals on Wheels

This Kosher Meals on Wheels service for people 60 and older, with food delivered from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. They can be contacted at 248-592-2313.

OPC Social and Activity Center

This Rochester-based organization has a Meals on Wheels program for anyone 50 or older in “Addison Township, Auburn Hills, Brandon Township, Clarkston, Independence Township, Lake Angelus, Leonard, Oakland Township, Orion Township, Oxford Township, Rochester and Rochester Hills” according to Oakland County. You can schedule a meal delivery arrangement by calling 248-608-0264.

Ladies of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul

This food pantry is at 2215 Opdyke Road, Bloomfield Hills. You can follow them on Facebook, email them, or call them at 248-646-0920.

The Congregational Church of Clarkston

They run a food pantry at 5549 Clarkston Road from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. every second Saturday

Clawson Food Pantry

The Grace Apostolic Church started this pantry in response to the 2008 great recession. They still run it at 700 East Elmwood every third Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. They can be reached at 248-307-0850.

Yad Ezra

Yad Ezra is the only kosher food pantry in Southeast Michigan, located at 2850 W. 11 Mile Road in Berkley. Its mission is to “Feed Families. Nourish Hope,” by providing supplemental kosher food, household essentials, and holiday-appropriate groceries to families in need. More information at YadEzra.org.

Hospitality House

This food pantry for Commerce Township is at 2075 East West Maple Road, Suite B204. They’re on Facebook, Instagram, and can be contacted at 248-960-9975.

CARES of Farmington Hills

This food bank is located between the baseball diamond and Corwell Health Farmington Hospital at 27835 Shiawassee Street. They can be reached at 248-474-8231.

Zion Lutheran

Zion Lutheran’s food pantry runs every third Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at 143 Albany Street. They’re on Facebook, and you can contact them either at 248-398-5510 or at fernzionoffice@gmail.com.

Community Sharing

This food bank is at 400 Beach Farm Circle in Highland Township. They have a Facebook account and even have a pet pantry. Their phone number is 248-889-0347, and their email is info@community-sharing.org.

First Baptist Church of Holly

Holy’s food pantry is meant for anyone within the Holly Area School District and they limit visits to one per month. They’re open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Believers Community Outreach Center

This food bank and feeding operation is located at 156 University Drive. They can be reached at 248-705-1658.

Pontiac Meals on Wheels

Pontiac’s dedicated Meals on Wheels program is on Facebook and can be contacted at 248-748-9393. You can also contact their Program Coordinator Rolonda Hillie at rolonda@uniquefoodmgt.com or Program Director Rosa Randolph at rosa@uniquefoodmgt.com.

Eastside Church of Christ

This Pontiac food bank is located at 149 Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard South. They can be reached at 248-701-3848.

Lighthouse of Oakland County

This homeless shelter non-profit operates three food pantry locations in Pontiac, Clarkston, and Southfield. Beneficiaries are limited to one delivery per month.

Open Arms Food Pantry

Southpoint Church runs their food pantry at 5699 Fort Street in Trenton from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It is intended for people from Southpoint and “also people who meet the federal low-income guidelines that live east of I-275, between I-94/Outer Drive and Ready Road/South Huron River Drive.” They can be contacted at foodpantry@southpoint.church.

Neighborhood House

They have a food pantry, transportation and clothing available at 1315 North Pine Street in Rochester. You can follow them on Instagram, Facebook, or call 248-656-4904.

Franciscan Outreach

This Southfield food and clothing bank is located at 25225 Code Road. It’s been operating for 65 years. They and can be contacted 248-356-6350.

Southfield Human Services

The City of Southfield also runs an emergency food program for its residents at 26000 Evergreen Road. They can be reached at 248-786-4540 to inquire about the dates of operation. Residents get one box of food each.

Active Faith

This South Lyon food bank is located at 401 Washington Street. Intended for residents of the school district, you can schedule a pick up time by contacting Diane at 248-437-9790. You can shop inside or do curbside pickup.

Open Door Outreach

This Waterford Township food pantry is located at 7124 Cooley Lake Road. They can be reached by email at tdavis@opendooroutreachcenter.com or by phone at 248-360-2930.

Waterford Senior Center

Their Meals on Wheels program operates out of their 3621 Pontiac Lake Road location and can reached at 248-682-9450.

Macomb County

Community Food Bank of Macomb County

The county government says that they provide help to 55 food banks throughout its jurisdiction. They also do mobile food distributions from 10:00 a.m. to noon. You can follow them on Facebook, or contact them at 586-469-6004 or at communityfoodbank@macombgov.org.

St. Mary Mystical Rose

This church-run food pantry is located at 24040 East Main Street in Armada. You can contact them at 586-784-5966 extension 5, or email dennis.lemieux@gmail.com.

South Eastern Michigan Indians

This Center Line charity provides help for Native Americans in urban communities and others. They’re locatedat 26641 Lawrence Road and are open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. You can follow them on Facebook, or contact them at semmi1975@yahoo.com or by calling 586-756-1350.

Woodside Bible Church

This food pantry runs from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Mondays and 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Fridays at 27300 Hoover Road in Warren. They have a Facebook page and can be contacted either at 586-758-4750 or at ryanrussell@woodsidebible.org.

Dragon Community Outreach

Families who are part of the Clintondale Community Schools District can receive food assistance from the Dragon Pantry. Organizer Carla Kelley can be contacted at 586-634-3293 or at kellyc@clintondaleschools.net.

Hope United Church of Christ

This church operates its food bank at 35127 Garfield Road every second Saturday of the month, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. It’s intended for Macomb County residents.

Veterans Food Bank

Benefitting veterans and their dependents, this food bank is located at 18025 15 Mile Road, Clinton Township. Veterans in need of food can call 586-776-9810 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, to schedule a pickup as long as they have a DD214.

Christian Trinity Church

This Eastpointe food bank opens every second and fourth Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. You don’t need to make an appointment.

Covenant Missions

Covenant Missions have a mobile food drive from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. every second and fourth Friday in the parking lot at 28491 Utica Road in Roseville.

Grace Food Pantry

The Grace Food Pantry at 115 South Main Street is open from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They also have a free dinner for up to 125 people starting at 4:00 p.m. every Wednesday and a soup kitchen every Sunday. They can be contacted at 586-465-4573 and gracemtclemens@yahoo.com.

Tired Stone

This pantry is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 23512 Henry B Joy Blvd. in Clinton Township. They can be contacted at 586-463-9422.

St. Mary Queen of Creation

This food bank serves the 48047, 48051, 48004, 48023 zip codes alongside Anchor Bay. They can be contacted at 586-725-2441.

AGAPE Center

The AGAPE Center at 347 South Main Street in Romeo is open from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays. Their phono number is 586-336-6737.

Hope Christian Church

Macomb County residents will be able to access this food pantry from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon every second Saturday.

Lakepointe Church

This Shelby Township-based church at 48571 Van Dyke Avenue provides packages of food intended to last five to seven days. No appointment is necessary when they distribute food from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. every second Saturday and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. every third Wednesday. Catholic Charities of St. Clair Shores

This charity is located at 23401 Jefferson St. and can be accessed from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. They can be reached at 248-537-3300 extension 3945.

Lakeshore Presbyterian

This food pantry at 27801 Jefferson Avenue, is open every second and fourth Monday, and every third Wednesday. You can follow them on Facebook and Instagram, email them at info@lakeshorechuch.com, and call 586-777-8533.

St. Lucy’s Church

The food bank at the church at 23401 East Jefferson Avenue in St. Clair Shores. You can call 586-775-0448 or parish@stlucychurch.com for more information.

Community Christian Church

Billed as the “largest food pantry in Macomb County,” this food bank is located at 42400 Ryan Road in Sterling Heights. They can be reached 586-323-1730.

Heritage Church

This church at 44625 Schoenherr Road in Sterling Heights opens its food pantry every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. They can be called at 586-997-9490.

Riverwood Community Church

This food bank is open every Wednesday from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Making an appointment at 586-739-9157 is preferred, but not required.

Ephrem Church

The food bank at this Roman Catholic church at 38900 Dodge Park Road in Sterling Heights requires an appointment to access their food bank, which runs from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. every Thursday. They only accept appointments by calling 586-264-1230 extension 1. Their website explains “Appointments open for the current week only on Monday mornings at 9:00 a.m., limited to the first 60 clients. The pantry may be used once a month, per household.”

Lord of the Harvest Christian Fellowship

This pantry is open from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday at 21601 Schoenherr Road in Warren. They can be contacted at lhcf1@comcast.net or by calling 586-498-8869.

Samaritan House

This food pantry is located at 62324 Van Dyke Road in Washington. They are open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday, and on Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. They can be contacted at 586-336-9956.

Washtenaw County

Food Gatherers

Food Gatherers are running emergency food distribution events for Washtenaw County residents in the parking lot of Briarwood Mall between JC Penney’s and Von Maur on November 15 and 19. No registration will be required when you pull into the parking lot at 100 Briarwood Circle between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. near the Sylvan Learning entrance. You will then be asked to drive through the parking lot to be provided with shelf-stable food boxes. They run their food bank out of 1 Carrott Way in Ann Arbor, and help supply other charities. Bryant Community Center

Photo ID is required at this food kitchen along with proof that you live there. According to SWOOP Pantry, they run their weekly program at 3 West Edgen Court from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday, and Saturdays from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m.

Community Action Network – Faith In Action

Serving Dexter, Chelsea, and the surrounding areas, they are located at 603 South Main Street in Chelsea and 7651 Dan Hoey Road in Dexter. They can be contacted via Facebook, Instagram, or by calling 734-475-3305.

Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County

This Washtenaw County-wide organization has a meal delivery operation if you have medical complications getting to them, as well as “congregat e-meals”. They also are running their special pantry runs from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday from their 2245 South State Street location. If you can’t make that time window, you can make an appointment to pick up food off-hours by contacting nourish@jfsannarbor.org. This program is for Washtenaw County residents only. While there is a two-visits-a-month limit, no appointments is necessary. Washtenaw County residents requiring kosher meals can get food delivered once per month. They can be reached at 734-769-0209.

Maize & Blue Cupboard

University of Michigan students can access their own food bank by walking down the delivery driveway to the walkout basement of Betsy Barbour Hall from the Thompson Street side. You can see what is available on their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, or call them at 734-946-2794. They are closed on Saturdays.

Saline Area Social Service

This food pantry can be found at 1259 Industrial Drive. You can follow them on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, by emailing them at info@salinesocialservice.com, or by phone at 734-429-4570.

St. Andrew’s Church

One of Kerrytown’s central churches offers a free daily breakfast starting at 7:30 a.m. They are at 306 North Division Street, are on Instagram, and can be called at 734-663-0518.

SWOOP’s Food Pantry

Students, faculty and alumni of Eastern Michigan University can use the food pantry located in the walkout basement of Pierce Hall. They can be reached at 734-487-4173 or  swoops_pantry@emich.edu.

The Back Door Food Pantry at St. Clare Episcopal Church

This food pantry opens from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. every Thursday at 2309 Packard Street. Call 734-662-2449 for more information.

Whitmore Lake Area Human Services

This food charity serves the border area between Washtenaw and Livingston Counties. They’re on Facebook, and you can get help from them by emailing info@wlahs.org or calling 734-492-1717.

Monroe County

Monroe County Opportunity Program

This food pantry and emergency food box program at 1140 South Telegraph Road actually combines six different options to service residents. You can follow them on Twitter or Facebook, contact Tamara Courts at tcourts1140@gmail.com, or call 734-241-2775 extension 222.

Monroe Outreach Ministries – Oaks Village

In addition to running a homeless shelter, this faith led program has a soup kitchen, food pantry, senior meals program, and food box program. You can find them at 924 East 2nd Street or call 734-244-5444.

Livingston County

Bountiful Harvest

This charity is based in Brighton but serves all of Livingston County. You can find them at 290 East Grand River Avenue, call them at 810-360-0271, follow them on Facebook, or email them at harvest@yahoo.com.

St. Joseph Food Pantry

This food pantry is open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon every Saturday, at the church at 440 East Washington Street. Daisy’s Food Pantry at St. Paul Lutheran Church
