Michelin has announced the ceremony in which a metro Detroit restaurant could receive its first Michelin star is officially happening in Detroit next year.
The inaugural Michelin Guide American Great Lakes Ceremony takes place on April 21 inside Michigan Central. Chefs will be invited to the ceremony to see whether they’ve won the coveted star — or another distinction — according to a press release. The event will be invite-only.
“We’re thrilled to welcome the Michelin Guide ceremony to Detroit and to Michigan Central next April,” said Visit Detroit President and CEO Claude Molinari in the press release. “As host city for the Michelin Guide American Great Lakes ceremony, Detroit will have an extraordinary opportunity to welcome culinary leaders from across the Great Lakes region and showcase our own food scene, creativity, and hospitality on an international stage. We’re proud to bring this prestigious celebration to Detroit, which is creating new reasons for people from around the world to visit, experience, and savor our culinary landscape.”
Detroit is one of six cities to be featured in the upcoming Michelin Guide American Great Lakes edition. The other five are Cleveland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh. In metro Detroit, restaurants in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties are eligible for consideration.

Our anonymous Inspectors look forward to finally sharing their discoveries with the world.”
News that Michelin was publishing its first guide that included Detroit first broke in April. Potential distinctions a restaurant can receive in the guide include a Michelin Star, as well as the Bib Gourmand and the Michelin-selected restaurant classification.
