Big City Lure, Small Town Charm: Adrian’s Cigar Lounge Provides an Experience Like No Other

The green, vintage sign advertising candy, popcorn, and cigars rests above the striped awning on of the row of brick buildings that form downtown Adrian, Michigan. Because it’s huddled in the middle of the pack of establishments, one may be tempted to overlook its significance. But, within the walls of Chaloner’s is a deep and vibrant history that streams like notes from the speakers.

The first-floor storefront, Chaloner & Co., is home to a hand-crafted, walk-in humidor housing an extensive cigar collection as well as nostalgic candies and locally famous popcorn. Chaloner’s Cigar House, which is located on the second and third floors of the building includes an upscale cigar lounge, featuring a full bar and handpicked selection of fine cigars. This only enhances the experience of a visit to Chaloner & Co.

“In my travels throughout Michigan, the Midwest, and beyond, I have never been to an establishment that compares to Chaloner’s,” explains Mary Howell, Chief Operating Officer and Principal Associate Broker for Legacy, LLC. “There is nothing like it anywhere.”

The second and third floor lounges provide ample opportunities for relaxation, refreshment, and reflection. A state-of-the-art ventilation system frequently circulates the air to ensure an enjoyable environment, while the plush leather seating allows guests to have a comfortable, pleasant visit.

Though Mary is regularly in the greater Detroit area for business, she comes to Chaloner’s for a variety of reasons. “Not only is it beautiful and classy, but it’s also a place I’ve brought business associates and employees as well as friends and dates. We’ve hosted private family events there as well,” recalls Mary.

Originally opened in 1874, this historic establishment proudly stands as Michigan’s oldest operating cigar shop. Through thoughtful renovations, both Chaloner & Co. and Chaloner’s Cigar House now provide a unique, innovative experience to the community and cigar aficionados everywhere. Patrons from southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio visit daily to enjoy live music, special events hosted by popular cigar makers or distillers, and quiet evenings out. “People are so surprised when I bring them here because it’s so different and unexpected,” shares Mary. “They always want to come back.”

One of the most unique features of Chaloner’s Cigar House is the atrium. Located on the third floor, this one-of-a-kind space contains a glass ceiling and waterfall feature which creates a calming atmosphere for non-smokers. Adjoining the atrium is the Chaloner’s Cigar Society Members Lounge where members and guests can enjoy a game of pool as they light up their favorite cigar, sip on a curated cocktail or top shelf bourbon, and enjoy a delectable appetizer.

Time changes most things, but at Chaloner’s, the past collides with the present. For those who are looking for a unique date night, a nice afternoon drive in a quiet community, or a fun night out for friends, make Chaloner’s your next destination. “I promise, you will not be disappointed,” shares Mary. “This is truly a unique and special place.”
