With the start of fall comes the resurgence of seasonal food and drink. Local businesses in Traverse City lean into the fall-themed fare and as a result, there is a bounty of autumnal provisions to enjoy this month. Take a tasty adventure through Traverse City this season!
Donuts & Cider
The beginning of fall is synonymous with the emergence of pumpkin donuts and apple cider; a perfect autumn pairing. Traverse City takes its donuts and cider seriously, making it a great fall destination. A family-owned local favorite, Potter’s Bakery, announced the return of “pumpkin season” in early September. Their offerings include pumpkin cinnamon and sugar cake donuts, pumpkin-glazed cake donuts, and pumpkin cinnamon and sugar donut holes. Pumpkin-glazed donut holes are available by special order. A classic spot for both donuts and cider is Gallagher’s Farm Market. Known for their pumpkin donuts baked fresh daily and refreshing local apple cider, they also boast a pumpkin patch and a barnyard that little ones love to explore. Third Coast Bakery is next, and it is unique in that it specializes in gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and vegan baked goods so that you can indulge guilt-free. Try their delicious sugared pumpkin donut and pumpkin oatmeal cream pie, and don’t forget a cup of their mulled cider to complete the cozy vibe. An honorable mention goes to the popular Bubbie’s Bagels for their pumpkin rugelach, a crescent-rolled pastry with sweet pumpkin filling.
Hard Apple Cider
With an abundance of cideries in the Traverse City area, it’s time to graduate to hard apple cider. The apple is an iconic symbol of fall, and its essence is captured in the local craft beverage scene. From draft to canned to bottled ciders, Tandem Ciders has it all. Tandem is located in the picturesque Suttons Bay and the fall colors pop on the property. Fan favorites include the Smackintosh, made from northern Michigan apples, and The Greenman. Nestled in the historic Grand Traverse Commons, Left Foot Charley is an independent winery and cidery with a tasting room and outdoor patio. This fun venue offers award-winning hard cider and wine, making it the perfect spot to celebrate the season. Townline Ciderworks has been growing fruit in the area for sixty years and making cider for twenty, so they’re a name you can trust. Every ounce of fruit in their hard ciders is grown in their orchards, making their product as fresh and local as it comes.
Autumnal Coffee Drinks
Specialty coffee drinks are a signature of the fall season, and the cafés of Traverse City deliver on all fronts. Mundos Roasting & Co. is a local staple that has multiple brick-and-mortar locations and a list of fall drinks that includes their Maple Pecan Latte, Pumpkin Chai, and the Harvest Market Latte. Good Harbor Coffee and Bakery, located right on Front Street, is Traverse City’s longest-standing coffee shop and they serve pumpkin pie lattes. Third Coast Bakery also has many seasonal coffee offerings, like Caramel Apple Matcha and Michigan Maple Chai-der.
