The holiday season is officially underway with the Nov. 5 arrival of Detroit’s Christmas tree in Campus Martius Park.
The 62-foot Norway spruce traveled 200 miles from Mesick, Michigan to Downtown Detroit with help from Amazon’s Prime delivery. The tree was wrapped in a massive tarp and transported via a flatbed semi truck down Woodward Ave. This is the first year the online retail giant has participated in the delivery of the city’s tree. A gallery of photos of the tree’s arrival can be viewed below.
Several local officials and business leaders were on hand to welcome the tree to Campus Martius Park. Among them was Melia Howard, the Deputy Mayor of the City of Detroit, who was in a celebratory spirit and excited about the holidays in the Motor City.
“I would do my very best impression of Mariah Carey, but I am not about to put you through that,” said Howard, which led to laughter from the crowd. “I want to say happy holidays to all Detroiters and all Michiganders.”
However, Howard did end her speech, with one nod to the Queen of Christmas, by saying, “It’s time!”
Decorations and Lighting Ceremony Details
With the tree delivered, the work begins with the decorations. This year, over 25,000 LED lights will be strung on the tree, which will also feature many oversized ornaments. Topping the tree with by a 9-foot-tall star. Underneath the tree will be wrapped Prime boxes from Amazon.
Campus Martius Park will host the 22nd Annual Detroit Tree Lighting on Friday, Nov. 21 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. For those who can’t make it downtown, WDIV Local 4 will air a special two-hour live presentation of the tree lighting ceremony beginning at 7 p.m.
