Someone whimsically once told me that vodka is the equivalent of tofu in the world of spirits. This is especially so when it comes to a quality vodka. Why? Because it easily takes on the flavor or essence of its mixer.

There’s no denying the versatility of vodka. But when most people think about vodka and the locations associated with it, they tend to think of countries like Russia or Poland. However, metro Detroit is the home to some beloved vodka brands. Some have even been recognized with national and international awards.

With National Vodka Day being celebrated on Oct. 4, here’s a look at five vodka brands made in metro Detroit.

Valentine Vodka by Valentine Distilling

If you’re a vodka fan in metro Detroit, we would be shocked if you haven’t heard of or had Valentine Vodka before. Produced by Ferndale’s Valentine Distilling, which was founded in 2007, Valentine Vodka has long prided itself on being additive-free. This kind of attention to detail has paid off, because the local spirt has won several awards, including back-to-back World’s Best Vodka honors in 2016 and 2017. (Their cheeky ad boasting about these awards while taking a shot at Russian vodka is particularly delightful.) For those that enjoy flavored vodka, Valentine also offers White Blossom, Berry Blossom, and Lionblood Orange, the distillery’s partnership with former Detroit Lion-turned CBS host Nate Burleson.

Varchas Vodka by Shankar Distillers

Shankar Distillers is best known for their whiskey offerings. Although, for those who aren’t big on whiskey, the Troy-based distillery also has its Varchas Vodka. This vodka prides itself on its universal appeal, whether you’re a casual vodka drinker or a passionate enthusiast. Additionally, Varchas Vodka boasts that its balanced flavor and lack of a harsh aftertaste makes it ideal vodka to sip neat or on the rocks. If you want to try Varchas Vodka for yourself, it’s only available for pick-up at its distillery in Troy.

28 Island Vodka by Two James Spirits

Like Shankar Distillers, Two James Spirits is also best known for their whiskey offerings. But among its robust spirit offerings — which includes gin, rum, and even absinthe — is its 28 Island Vodka. This vodka gets its name from the 28 islands that were once located in the Detroit River. These islands were used to smuggle and hide alcohol that was coming in from Canada during Prohibition. While many of those islands have since submerged since that period in history, 28 Island Vodka acts as a unique tribute. Made from 100% organic winter wheat, guests who book a tour of Two James Distillery (chronicled in the video below from Visit Detroit) get the chance to sample 28 Island Vodka, as well as other spirits made at this Corktown-based distillery.

Detroit Steam Vodka by Rusted Crow Spirits

Detroit Steam Vodka is crystal-clear craft vodka from Dearborn Heights’ Rusted Crow Spirits. It’s 12-times distilled and features mild notes of citrus and bamboo. With its subtle flavor of pear, lemon peel, and gentian, Detroit Steam Vodka is featured in a diverse selection of offerings from Rusted Crow Spirits’ craft cocktail menu. Among those cocktails is the Detroit Steamsicle, which contains fresh orange juice, cream, and Faygo’s Creme Soda.

Gilded Age Vodka by Detroit City Distillery

Proudly located in Eastern Market, the spirit offerings from Detroit City Distillery include its Gilded Age Vodka. Made from 100% Michigan corn, Gilded Age Vodka has notes of vanilla and melon. The vodka is also the base for Detroit City Distillery’s Blue Roar, a Detroit Lions-inspired ready-to-drink cocktail with lemon, blue curacao, and strawberry. For those looking for a vodka with a kick or who can’t pass up a Bloody Mary, consider checking out their Hometown Horseradish Vodka, which we reported on when it was first released in 2023.
