Bundle up in style while giving back. Local fashion brand Detroit Hustles Harder, artist Toney Whlgn, and Downtown Boxing Gym have collaborated on a limited-edition varsity jacket to benefit the Eastside Detroit after-school program.

The design of the lightweight black-and-white jacket was inspired by Downtown Boxing Gym’s core values: family, trust, commitment, and respect. The jacket features colorful artwork by Whlgn — a local creative whose art has appeared in Murals in the Market, on Vans shoes, and on album covers — including the gym’s lion logo, boxing glove imagery, and “knockout” stars.

The varsity jacket retails for $225 and is available for presale through March 5. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Downtown Boxing Gym.

From Monday through Friday, the nonprofit serves more than 150 local students between the ages of 8-18. The gym teaches youth life lessons “in and outside of the boxing ring” through tutoring, mentorship, and college and career readiness education, and more. During the pandemic, it’s been delivering emergency food and supplies to families as well as offering online programs to students.

“I’m proud of the way our DBG family stepped up and showed up for our students, families, and the community throughout the pandemic. We’re working hard to battle learning loss, the digital divide, and many other challenges our students and families are facing,” says Khali Sweeney, Downtown Boxing Gym founder and CEO, in a press release. “It means a lot that our work and core values inspired the design of this jacket. We appreciate the collaboration and support for DBG.”

A sample of the jacket is on display at Playground Detroit, located at 1435 Farmer St. Those interested in placing an order can do so online
