Emily Kahn’s love of fashion began at Kiddlywinks, the children’s clothing store her mom, Cindy, ran in Birmingham. Kahn studied apparel merchandising and worked in fashion in New York City. During the pandemic, she moved back to Michigan and transitioned to residential real estate at Cindy Kahn Real Estate with The Agency Birmingham. With her on-the-go schedule, Kahn favors outfits that make her feel confident and transition well from day to night.
What is your go-to outfit?
A deconstructed trouser or great pair of jeans paired with a funky jacket or sweater. I love starting with something relaxed and comfortable and then adding a piece with personality. It feels effortless but still interesting, which is usually what I’m going for.
What’s your thought process when putting together an outfit?
Comfort is always a priority because I’m constantly on the go for work, but I never want to sacrifice style. Usually there’s one piece that drives the outfit — a great jacket, an interesting pant, or a shoe — and I build around that.
Do you have a guilty pleasure fashion item?
Jackets, although I don’t feel guilty about it! I have a serious jacket collection. A great jacket can transform the simplest outfit, so I’m always drawn to collecting unique ones.
Who is your favorite designer or brand?
Sacai, Marni, Simone Rocha, and Dries Van Noten are always top of mind. I love designers that play with proportion, texture, and construction and make pieces that feel interesting without being overly trendy.
If you could raid anyone’s closet whose would it be?
[Content creator] Tania Sarin, 100%. I feel like my style is really aligned with hers. I love the way she mixes proportions, layers pieces, and makes something oversize or unexpected still feel incredibly chic and effortless.
Where do you shop?
Tender has been a longtime favorite for investment pieces and special finds that become staples in my closet. I also love shopping at Saks for both timeless pieces and discovering something new or unexpected. Hersh’s, which is owned by my father-in-law, is another go-to for elevated basics.
