How has your style evolved over the years?

I wouldn’t call it so much of an evolution because I’m quite traditional in my dress. I grew up wearing a tie and jacket to school. I really enjoy putting my clothing together. I’m pretty conservative, but I might show some flair with a lining or something.

What does your closet say about you?

That I have a really difficult time letting go of stuff. I have cashmere sweaters that are 25 years old and older, and they’re some of my favorite pieces of clothing. I like to buy quality items that stay around because they’re timeless in a lot of ways.

What is your favorite brand?

I love Loro Piana. They make fascinating fabrics and have great quality. I have a Horsey jacket that’s 20 years old and fits great, and I have sweaters that are just wonderful.

Do you prefer to shop online or in person?

I really enjoy finding a sale online. But if I’m traveling and I have time, I like to step into a store and talk to a sales associate and find items. But because I’m a pretty big guy, all my sport coats and suits are custom made.

If you could raid anyone’s closet, whose would it be?

Sidney Poitier’s closet. There is no more dignified a public persona than Mr Poitier. [I admire his] unwavering commitment to racial equality and civil rights at a time when he had so much to risk. He managed to build a remarkable career while taking on and dispelling racial stereotypes with aplomb.

What item in your wardrobe has the most sentimental value?

A three-quarter, button-down cashmere Loro Piana sweater. It’s almost 30 years old and a gift from my mother-in-law.
