Scott Atkinson’s essays and articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Hour Detroit, and other publications. For this issue, he briefly got in the ring with Claressa Shields — the first American boxer to win consecutive gold medals at the Olympics, as well as the first female boxer from the U.S. to win gold (page 25). Shields learned the boxing ropes in Flint, a city Atkinson has been reporting on since he was a journalism student and for many years as a staff writer for The Flint Journal. He is the editor of the essay collection Happy Anyway: A Flint Anthology, and teaches writing at the University of Michigan-Flint.

Daniels’ food writing has appeared in NPR’s The Salt, Lucky Peach, Eater, Extra Crispy, and the Metro Times. Her favorite tacos come from back home in Los Angeles, she doesn’t believe in ketchup on hot dogs, and prefers her pizza square.
