New year, new you — new desk? Whether you are willing to admit it, you probably spend the majority of your week at your desk. Now that’s officially 2019, it’s time to bring the spirit of renewal to your workplace.

Plants are an excellent way to breathe new life into any space because they increase oxygen levels during the day. Scientific studies also show that humans who interact with indoor plants have decreased psychological and physiological stress, which includes reduced diastolic blood pressure.

Above all, they’re bright, green, and always beautiful. Here are four metro Detroit shops where you can purchase the perfect new desk accessory.

Pot & Box

This botanical design shop operates out of Detroit’s Fisher Building and is outfitted with plants for all skill levels. “We just got the sanseviera, more commonly known as the snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue,” says manager Michelle McCoskey. “They’re low maintenance, don’t need a lot of water, and are a great beginner’s plant.”  3011 W. Grand Blvd., Suite 130, Detroit; 313-212-1869; potandbox.com

English Gardens

With locations across metro Detroit, this family-owned garden and landscape franchise has an abundance of office beautifying flora. Cynthia Kidd, a floral designer at the West Bloomfield outpost recommends pothos, also known as devil’s ivy. “They do well under fluorescent light and clean the air.”  6370 Orchard Lake Rd., West Bloomfield Township; 248-851-7506; englishgardens.com

Stem and Stone

One of the most popular items at this Birmingham botanical market are air plants, also known as tillandsia. “It’s really good for the office because they’re low maintenance. Succulents are also nice because they require very little water,” says associate Erin Ellis. 122 W. Maple Rd., Birmingham, MI; 248-203-2284

Downtown Home & Garden

An Ann Arbor retailer that was established in 1906, Downtown Home and Garden sells everything including house and kitchen items, gardening supplies, and of course, indoor plants. “One of the problems people have at their desks is lack of light so the ZZ plant is perfect. You can almost grow it in a closet,” says Bill Moran, self-titled “Renaissance Man” of the store. 210 S. Ashley St., Ann Arbor; 734-662-8122; downtownhomeandgarden.com
